Last week I spoke with an EU citizen who was furious that the Comune rejected their residency application. It turned out they only submitted a passport copy and tax code. Always check what your town hall requires, and remember they can ask for extra documents to show you won’t be a burden on Italy.

Non-EU nationals in Italy on Elective Residency Visas (not employed or self-employed locally) currently pay about €2,000–€2,850 per year to access the SSN healthcare system. Many consider this too low, so an increase may be coming. #italy #healthcare #immigration

Yesterday I spoke with a woman from the US who’d seen a video about Italian towns offering money to foreigners who move there. These programs do exist, but they don’t come with any immigration benefits. Non-EU citizens still need to qualify for a visa on their own.

Renting in Italy can be a surprise. Tenants handle most things in the property, while landlords cover only major issues. I always explain this before check-in to prevent problems later. Understanding the local rental culture early makes everything smoother.

They say 95% of where you go in life depends on who you know. If that’s true, start showing up. Expat events are fun, but my best business connections in Italy came from 100% Italian gatherings. Go where the locals go, bring great cards, and always follow up.

A 68-year-old near Rovigo shot an intruder during a break-in and won’t face charges. Under new rules backed by Giorgia Meloni, such acts are deemed “legitimate defence.” Meloni said today: “Self-defence is always legitimate.” A clear shift in Italy’s stance on home protection. #Italy #Meloni #law

I get so many inquiries from people dreaming of small-town life in Italy, but without stable passive income or a location-independent business, it’s just not realistic. Jobs in those towns are rare. Plan, plan, and plan.

The Italian Court of Cassation has postponed the Jan 13, 2026, hearing to Spring, giving judges more time. Key issues: retroactivity of Decree Law 36/2025 on citizenship by descent, and loss of citizenship by minors when an ancestor naturalized abroad. A landmark ruling is expected.

Yesterday, my client secured a beautiful rental with a livable terrace near Piazza Fiume in Rome. It took three months -terraces with a view are a premium and rarely easy to find. Wrong area, transitory contract, over budget … there’s always something. But persistence pays off.

Working on a permit renewal for an English teacher in Milan, and honestly surprised - TEFL pay in Italy seems lower now than in the 1990s. A few exceptions aside, it’s a sector that hasn’t moved in decades.

Be thankful for the challenges that come with moving to Italy. They’ll make you more adaptable, patient, and resilient. Don’t let them overwhelm you. Let them shape you.

Just got an email from someone who moved to Italy and tried to sort out their taxes using random advice from the internet and expat forums. I don’t even know what to say anymore. If you’re moving to Italy, work with an Italian expert - the tax system’s tricky, and DIY fixes can cost you a lot later.

L’affitto con riscatto, Italy’s rent-to-buy option, is still niche, but it can work with the right guidance. Many owners won’t go for it, especially with in-demand properties, but in the right case it’s a smart path. Due diligence is everything.

Last week was jam-packed with appointments, so today life in Rome is all about a supermarket run to keep the household going - followed by lunch at my favorite neighborhood restaurant. Then it’s back at it tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. to figure out why a client’s residency is stuck at the Comune! 😀

I think a great business idea in Italy would be an on-demand maid service. Say you’ve had a party and need three cleaners the next day for eight hours - the agency could send staff just for that one-off job. Personally, I think there’d be a real market for something like this.

When I moved to Italy in 1988, people said I wouldn’t last a year. They didn’t count on the gladiator spirit of a determined soul. Just goes to show - never let other people’s limits become your own.
