the way nobody understands innocent feeds directly into the way so few people are really appreciating eldest daughter, imo. that song is a load bearing pillar for the themes of her entire discography, & it represents taylor in such a quintessential way that i'm surprised so many people can't see it.

you pretend it doesnt bother you anymore. you keep your wishes behind locked doors, secret gardens in your mind. your hope is a child that was never nurtured, and the world seems to say, time and time again, it does not belong here. sometimes you wonder why you keep trying to get it back every time.

you try. you put yourself out there. you look for the good in people and trust them when they said it was just a mistake. you get back up each time. but the gravel sticks in your knees and the dirt mars your arms and you decide you cant keep doing this sort of thing openly anymore. so you hide away.

she didnt have to take the high road and look at the situation with a spin of hope and optimism and good faith, but she did. and people tore her apart for it back then, and still refuse to take it seriously 15 years on. that rejection of goodness is the exact thing eldest daughter is grappling with.

the fact that people back then called the song immature and pathetic, and people even now can't take it seriously because they have the awareness of hindsight to know just how truly undeserving That Man was of a song like that, when the entire point of the song underscores taylor's genuine nature
