On the floor is a Bellanca Aircruiser. CF-AWR was built in 1935 and was the first of five of its type used in Canada. It was operated for Eldorado by Mackenzie Air Service Limited of Edmonton and was the second-largest aircraft operating in Canada at that time. This aircraft was named the Eldorado Radium Silver Express. Overhead is Havilland Beaver, C-FMAA The Association of Industrial Designers has named the Beaver one of the Over the years, 1,962 Beavers were built and exported to 62 countries, including 981 to the U.S.A. for civil and military use. The Beaver was the first aircraft built outside of the United States to be purchased by the U.S. military. Approximately 900 “Flying Jeeps,” as U.S. military personnel called them, were employed in medical evacuation and support roles. The Beaver was invaluable to the U.S. military during the Korean conflict as a reconnaissance plane and for extracting wounded soldiers from remote areas thanks to its STOL capability. The remote regions of the Korean peninsula, where much of the fighting took place, are heavily forested and mountainous, terrain similar to that found in northern Canada, where the Beaver was designed to operate. The Beaver proved to be highly reliable in situations of limited maintenance and punishing use. Suspended - North American NA-64 “Yale” RCAF 3430 The Yale was part of a long series of successful training aircraft produced by North American Aviation, including the more famous Harvard.Unlike the Harvard, the Yale featured fixed landing gear and a less powerful engine, making it cheaper to manufacture and easier for novice pilots to fly. Initially, the Yale served as an intermediate trainer as part of a three-step flight training process.Pilots learning to fly single-engine aircraft like fighters would start out flying the de Havilland Tiger Moth biplane, then progress to the Yale and the Harvard. However, it was soon realized that the middle step was redundant and that pilots could easily transition from the Tiger Moth directly to the Harvard.The Yale was thus eliminated as an intermediate trainer and relegated to training wireless operators. Bottom right is JU 52/1M, CF-ARM (RETROFIT) Junkers new Ju 52/1m,or Iron Annie as she was affectionately known in Germany, was the largest aircraft the world had ever seen, when it was rolled out in 1931. The first six Annies, including the one ordered by Richardson, were built with a single BMW engine but, when the early models proved under-powered, Junkers revamped the design to include two more engines, located in the wings. The tri-motor Ju 52/1m would become Germany’s most popular aircraft;thousands were still in the service of the Luftwaffe at the outset of the Second World War. When the Canadian Airways Limited Ju 52/1m,registered CF-ARM, arrived in Canada it was not only the largest airplane in the country but the largest single-engine aircraft in all of North America.With a single engine, the “Flying Boxcar,”as it became known in Canada, was light enough to land on enormous specially designed pontoons. With its capacity of nearly 8,000 lbs,CF-ARM regularly carried oversized loads, including mining equipment and cattle from the company’s Brandon Avenue Air Base on the banks of Winnipeg’s Red River. Overhead is the classic Stinson SR-8CM, CF-AZV, Originally purchased in 1936 by Canadian Airways, this workhorse of a bush plane was registered to Canadian Pacific Airlines in 1942. The Stinson Reliant was introduced in 1936 and could accommodate a pilot and four passengers. Stinson Aircraft Corporation manufactured it in Michigan. The gull-wing Reliants were very popular aeroplanes, and more than 1,000 of them were built before the Second World War. The fuselage, tail surfaces, and wings were of welded steel-tube construction–typical of the period. The whole framework was covered with cotton fabric. Bottom left JU 52/1M, CF-ARM (RETROFIT) Bottom right Vickers Viscount VC2, CF-THS Suspended - Canadair CL-114 Tutor RCAF #114004 The Tutor was officially adopted by the Canadian Forces in 1963. 190 were built for Canadian use, serving in the primary training role until 2000 when they were replaced by the BAE CT-155 Hawk and Fairchild CT-156 Harvard II. 20 ground-attack variants known as the CL-41G-5 Tebuan were also built for the Royal Malaysian Air Force, serving from 1967 to 1986. In 1971, the Tutor was adopted as the official aircraft of 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, better known as the Snowbirds. Lower right Vickers Viscount VC2 CF-THS THE Vickers Viscount became the world’s first turboprop airliner and first turbine-powered aircraft to enter scheduled service in North America. Its initial flight took place on July 16, 1948. Built by Vickers Armstrong, Trans-Canada Air Lines purchased 51 Viscounts from the plant in Weybridge, Surrey, England, between December 6, 1954, and May 2, 1959. These planes were equipped with four Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop engines. The Viscounts destined for the Trans-Canada Air Lines fleet were adapted to cold-weather operations, and as Canada had similar operations regulations to the U.S., this was seen as a step toward Trans-Canada Air Lines entering a difficult U.S. market. Cold-weather trials were conducted in Churchill, Manitoba. The adaptations raised the $1 million price tag of each plane by $25,000. By the end of 1955, the Viscounts were serving 14 cities in Canada, and the U.S. The museum’s Viscount, CF-THS, entered service on the Montreal-Winnipeg route in February 1958. It operated from the Trans-Canada Air Lines hangar in Winnipeg (now the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada) until it was withdrawn from service by Air Canada and stored in Winnipeg in April 1974. It had two other owners before being donated to the museum in September 1982. Volunteers overhauled its interior, and the plane was also given a new paint job by Air Canada, sporting the original Viscount Air Canada livery.
