Special trip to L.A.’s Marquez Family Cemetery, a rare remnant of the Boca de Santa Monica land grant. It’s still owned by the family that once controlled 6k acres here. It’s been a private cemetery since 1840 — when this was Mexico — and is hidden in a Santa Monica neighborhood.

Personal news: after 13 years, this is my last day at the Los Angeles Times. I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to tell the stories of the city alongside such a committed and thoughtful newsroom. I’m also very excited about my next chapter and will have more to say about it soon.

Back when I was making the Larger Than Life podcast, I did a ton of research on the Watts Uprising. For our subject, street racer Big Willie Robinson, it was a turning point. I read the official report on the unrest, but never got a physical copy. Finally found it. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/l...

When I learned that you can get your car fixed for (basically) free by automotive students at L.A. Trade-Tech College, I had to know more. Yes, they’ll fix your car — if its issues align w/ what is being taught. You do have to pay for the parts. Our piece: www.latimes.com/california/s...

L.A. Trade Tech's automotive training program, the biggest among local community colleges, has been growing in recent years.

Charles H. Owens, a mid-century illustrator for the @latimes.com, is best known for the vivid maps he made during World War II that illuminated key battles. But he also penned maps of CA and beyond. When I found this rare one from 1940, it was in tatters. Glad to finally have it restored.

You can minor in comedy performance at USC — and take classes on stand-up, improv and medical clowning.

Wait. Medical clowning? Yep.

USC’s quirkiest minor is pursued by students aiming for careers in science and medicine. The reason they do it will surprise you: www.latimes.com/california/s...

Since 2015, USC's School of Dramatic Arts has offered a minor in comedy performance, but it isn't just aspiring entertainers who pursue the work.

It’s opening day at Max & Helen’s, the new Larchmont diner from Phil Rosenthal and Nancy Silverton. The wait for a table is currently between two and a half and three hours. (Don’t worry, you can put your name on a list — there is no line to stand in.)

Our #Dodgers parade liveblog is here — follow along for our reporting from DTLA: www.latimes.com/sports/dodge...
November 3, 2025 at 8:05 PM
In an office tower a half mile from the parade, you’d never know there’d just been a Dodgers celebration. A sleepy lobby cafe was unloading bruised bananas on a pair of a besuited men and security guards lazed on stools. But outside, blue confetti fell from the sky like a secret.
November 3, 2025 at 7:59 PM
The parade is over and Dodger fans are walking the team’s confetti-strewn route through downtown. The familiar sights and sounds of nearly any large L.A. gathering are here: the hot dog vendors, people sorting through trash to collect cans for recycling, and the insistent churn of choppers overhead.
November 3, 2025 at 7:37 PM
The vibes at the #Dodgers parade were wholly positive: the only act of disobedience (if it could be called that) visible from one vantage point was a handful of people climbing on top of a KTLA news van. They were only trying to get a better view of the parade and soon dispersed.
