NEW Gross misconduct inquiry launched into 11 police officers/staff who worked at Charing X police station, says
polie watchdog, IOPC.
One officer criminally investigated for perverting course of justice.
Follows undercover BBC Panorama filming.
But it's too late for common assault charges...

A reminder: Feb 2022 after IOPC report into discriminatory WhatsApps between Charing X officers,
Met Police launched 16-point Action Plan, ‘Not in my Met’ campaign to encourage officers to speak out, a culture-change programme & there was the Casey Report, too.

Yet, 3 years on, here we are again.

On & off duty, Aug 24-Jan 25.
In response:

NEW What will Labour's plan for a Brit Card look like & will it work?

Likely to be modelled on Labour Together's plan for a digital card downloaded onto smartphones which can be instantly checked by employers & landlords using a free verifier app.

Why Brit Card?

The reason is clear.

Labour Together says it would send a "clear signal to international partners especially France...the UK is doing all it can to prevent illegal migrants disappearing into the economy."

Lack of UK digital ID is widely seen by foreign govts as a weak point .

Costs of Brit Card & infrastructure needed:

Labour Together reckons £140-£400m.

Experience says Govt IT projects go over budget, so this is probably an under-estimate.

Users wouldn't pay for their card - but wouldn't a modest fee help cover costs?

How would a Brit Card work?

Labour Together says it would "allow the Home Office to build a canonical record of where & when checks have been successfully completed... cross-checked against administrative datasets - like PAYE records & forthcoming National Landlord Database."

Brit Card benefits:

Labour Together says it would help enforce migration rules.
Around 1 million people are thought to live in UK without permission - but LT admits Brit Card is not a "silver bullet"
It could also be used for controlling access to services, eg welfare

Cases in magistrates' courts also at record levels.

At the end of June there were 361,027 outstanding cases, up 6% on March & 25% up on the year before.

However hard judges & lawyers work to clear the Crown Court backlog, cases from magistrates courts keep coming...

Here's a chart from Minstry of Justice showing that victims are waiting almost 2 years for justice, on average (using the mean).

Some cases take 3 or 4 years, with trials not listed until 2028 and 2029.

The record Crown Court backlog - at the end of June - was 2% up on March & 10% on June 2024.
Biggest yearly rise was sexual offences, up 18% & violence, up 15%.
On average, how long does it take for a case to conclude after the crime?
23 months (mean)
11 months (median)

NEW Over 1,600 people have been arrested for showing support for Palestine Action, since it was banned in July.

Has the Government badly misjudged this?

Should the Met Police take a different approach?

I’ve been exploring the arguments for the Telegraph:
