NS could have found a creative way to turn bridge tolls (and more) into something like congestion pricing to fund Halifax-area transit and get other benefits.
We did the “common sense” thing instead and removed the tolls entirely, ugh.
fantastic article with data showing how congestion pricing is one of the most effective transportation policies ever.

as a day 1 congestion pricing supporter it has been so satisfying to see the program be so successful

Apologies for the delay in replying to your Reddit comment about how no one rides bikes in Halifax, I was out riding my bike

Will say again: if I could be out riding today despite the temperature, so many others could be as well with proper support.

It has been 0 days since "check out When Driving Is Not an Option" by @nondriver.bsky.social was the perfect response to "we need to accept that a large majority need vehicles."

New bot dropped.

It often feels like people share news of Halifax permits, esp for demolition, as if they are secret knowledge.

It’s all open data and now this bot posts them with street view (if available) and maps.

Just demolition for now but may expand depending on volume.

Very cool to see numbers consistently trending up for the established counters like SP here and Vernon!

Related, if you want to "push back" against Austerity Andy and tell Halifax Council you want more investment in cycling (and other needed services), you can do that on Jan 27, 6 pm, City Hall
Previous year counts for South Park:

Went through the Donham Diverter for the first time. It’s beautiful. A number of drivers pretended the stop signs were totally gone but they were probably doing that before.

We've done #TreeByBike every year (except 2023) since 2018! We are noticing our trees have gotten bigger as our cargo capacity has grown 😀

I come from the desert and get cold very easily.
Every time I go for a #BikeHfx ride when it’s chilly, like this morning, I think about all the people much heartier than me that could be doing it too if we had the needed infrastructure.

Coming up on 5 years of scraping the NS Power outage map. One thing I'm always interested in is how many "Vehicle Accident" outages there are:

2021 142
2022 185
2023 137 (incomplete data)
2024 186
2025 147 (so far)

Last December had 35 so still time for this year to catch up!
outages: select strftime('%Y', first_observed) as year, count(*) from outage_summaries where last_cause='Vehicle Accident' and date(first_observed) > '2021' group by 1

On Nov 11 I finally reported the wire that’s sagging over the new part of the Barrington greenway to 311.

They responded saying it wasn’t their deal. They copied NS power.

NSP replied today saying it’s not theirs and to try Bell Aliant.

Just spent 20+ mins between chat and phone reporting to BA

Nothing more has happened here, delayed yet again?

I’m very tired of sending emails like this, so it wasn’t my most coherent, but I felt I had to tell council not to fucking do a staff report on licensing ebikes & escooters. If you want to, too, you can easily email all of them here: hfx.bike/email-council/
