One of the key ideas in IFS is unburdening. This is the release of painful thoughts, beliefs, emotions and memories held in the brain, body and nervous system.

How can you learn to hold your young parts with open-hearted awareness?

You could explore this in your journal. Start by asking yourself: Which feelings do you commonly push away? Many people struggle with anger, often for good reasons, so you may exile angry thoughts or feelings. ✍️
Next time you feel anxious, angry, lonely or upset, try this.

This often helps tension dissipate, in a simple, patient way, rather than trying to get rid of the feeling quickly.

Next time you feel anxious, angry, lonely or upset, try closing your eyes and breathing deeply, in through your nose and out through your mouth. Let your belly rise and fall with each breath.

When we find a hurt young part, our natural tendency is to work hard to fix them or push for some kind of healing.

This doesn’t tend to work, as you will know if you have ever been upset and your partner tried hard to fix you, rather than patiently listening and giving you a big hug.
Whether the clouds are fluffy and benign or fizzing with intense emotion and lightning, they pass across the infinite sky, which is not harmed in any way.

Think of the sky as awareness, spacious enough to hold any experience, positive or negative, with a loving, balanced presence. 🌤️

We may be prone to hatred and anger, but we are also wired to love, to connect, to live in community with others.

This atomised urban life is so new and unfamiliar – barely 200 years old, which is the blink of an eye in human history. ❤️‍

I know how painful anxiety can be. But Buddhists have understood for 2,500 years that the more we can accept impermanence, embrace change rather than kicking against it, the less we will suffer and calmer we will feel. ✍️✨
We all need to learn how to embrace change, rather than fighting against it.

This idea of impermanence applies on the grandest scale – even our galaxy, the Milky Way, will eventually merge with other galaxies, its planets and stars scattered into new formations.
Most people don’t like change. We want things to stay the same, especially if we feel calm and comfortable with our world as it is.

The Buddha taught that this is an illusion, uniquely created in the human mind. Because nothing stays the same, everything around you is in a state of flux & change. 🧘

It’s normal for our mood to shift as it gets colder and darker, so if you’re feeling down right now, sending you warm thoughts, as I know from personal experience how hard that can be. 🍂

The more you think about little you, the better they will feel, the stronger that internal attachment becomes and the easier it is to self-soothe when you’re feeling stressed, upset, anxious, lonely or any other painful feeling. 🩵

It seems to me we are having a paradigm shift in psychology, which is to understand that we are all many selves – young parts like your inner child, and protective parts, like your Worrier, who try to stop that small, sensitive, vulnerable part of you getting hurt, rejected, criticised or attacked.
I know from many years of my own therapy that, to heal from my childhood trauma, I must heal the part who experienced that trauma in the first place – and that’s Little Dan. 💚

I am a tall 57-year-old man and sometimes I feel like a 6 year old kid, small and wobbly, unable to speak up or fight back when I’m feeling unconfident or under attack. That’s when the part I call Little Dan has blended with me, in IFS terminology, taking me over so there is no me there, just him. ❤️‍
Dr Carl Jung, one of the founding fathers of psychology, wrote about the Child archetype, which consisted of memories and emotions from each stage of a person’s childhood development. This idea laid the foundations for what we now call the inner child. 👶
