Married father of two near adult girls who fell back in love with music aged 40 and is looking for a #VinylCommunity to validate his ever growing habit.
Today's #AlphabettiDischetti is a very recent classic:

Suede - Antidepressants

My album of the year for 2025. Suede's recent reinvention to a more post-punk style, perfect for Anderson's changing voice, reaches new heights with the addition of goth-rock elements here.

Kate Bush - Hounds of Love

One of the greatest albums of all time, nevermind top 1001. Shame you need to take out a mortgage to get a copy these days.

Side 1 full of instantly recognisable bangers. Side 2 great experimental pieces. All great.

Talking Heads - Remain in Light

The last of the Eno collaborations. Taking inspiration from an amazing range of genres, most notably Afrobeat, and sharing the writing around more equitably, the band created the high water mark of an already great career.

Last night's #AlphabettiDischetti

Paul Weller - An Orchestrated Songbook

Along with Jules Buckley, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and some special guests (Celeste is a highlight), they have created something beautiful here. A lot of effort has gone into properly arranging the songs.

A Place To Bury Strangers - self titled.

Strong shoegaze debut. A band that have found their sound and stick to it. It leads to a very accomplished debut, but might also be slightly to their detriment. Only the closing track, Ocean, shows any musical variation.

Rocket were great. Come on a long way since we last saw them 6 months ago.
Growing in confidence and looking comfortable. Big things to come.

AINT weren't bad as a support act. Not polished, but you wouldn't expect it in this price bracket.

Were generally better when they weren't trying to squeeze in every shoegaze cliche into the same song.

Can see them getting better as they keep gigging.

Rocket up next.

First gig of the new year coming up.

Rocket, +AINT.
Brundenell Social Club, Leeds.

One of a few this year where we are going to see someone who impressed us as a support act last year now get their own show.

Rocket also sneaked into my #5Albums2025 list last year with their debut.

Today's #AlphabettiDischetti is one for my mum.

Billy Joel - An Innocent Man

Mum used to listen to this all the time when I was growing up, so when I had the chance to pick up an old copy for a couple of quid I did.

Brought back a lot of memories. Some good songs in there.

John Lennon - John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band

Great solo debut. Generally a very raw low-fi experimental sound. Most of the time this adds to the quality of the work, though it can go a little too raw when he is shouting.

First #5DebutAlbums0509 random listen.

Fleet Foxes - self titled

Seen a lot of people mention this and I can see why. Gorgeous little album. Lovely harmonising and a very traditional range of instruments.

If this doesn't make my top 5, I'll have discovered some great sutff

Today's #AlphabettiDischetti is the last of my late Cash LPs.

Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave.

The second posthumous release from the series. Still a good standalone album, but compared to the rest of the series, it does feel like they were running out of great tracks.

#5DebutAlbums0509 falls right at the start of my post-student musical fallow years. I'll be relying a lot on reviews to get a listening list.

One album I do own and love though is:
Florence + the Machine - Lungs

Impress me more than this, and you're probably making my top 5.

Elvis Presley - self titled

Debut of an artist who hadn't fully found his signature rockabilly baritone yet. It's in there, from the famous first track, but the songs where he experiments with a throaty tenor delivery don't work as well.

Today's #AlphabettiDiachetti

Johnny Cash - American IV: The man comes around.

Best of the American series. Famous for it's absolutely classic covers but in the self-penned title track Cash left us with one last great song.

Plus Nick Cave and Cash duet. What more could you want?

R.E.M. - Murmur

One of the greatest debut albums ever. R.E.M. arrived fully formed from day 1.

So many styles of alt-rock in one album, all delivered close to perfection. Just don't try and work out what some of the lyrics actually mean.

Today's #AlphabettiDischetti is the first of several consecutive Cash albums.

Johnny Cash - American III - Solitary man

I'm obsessed with late life Cash. His slowed down style was perfect for so many covers, and great originals.
The cover of Mercy Seat on this is exceptional.

Sepultura - Roots

Not usually a fan of the screaming heavy metal but sometimes it's backed up by such a great musical performance that it just works. This is definitely one of those albums. And the inclusion of Brazilian beats makes it unique.

Today's #AphabettiDischetti
Smashing Pumpkins - Aghori Mhori Mei

A real return to form for the Pumpkins after a some albums of faffing. Accessible harder but still melodic rock. Saw them live last summer and the tracks from this album fit in well with the classics.

Madness - The Rise and Fall

Quite different to most of the list, as you'd expect with Madness. But it's eminently catchy and a lot of fun.

The accent used towards the end of 'New Deli' hasn't aged well though.

Dry Cleaning - Secret Love

Album of the year so far for me. This band seems incapable of releasing anything that is less than excellent.

#NewMusicFriday recommendation

Ellur - At home in my mind.

Local talent who has impressed us the couple of times we've seen her live. Her debut album, released today, straddles the line between indie and modern pop really effectively.

This is the gorgeous #Dinked edition.

Today's #AlphabettiDischetti
Pet Shop Boys - Actually.

An album where the boys show the full range of their talents. From catchy dance-pop, to orchestral pieces that would fit in any musucal, to one of the most vital LGBTQ+ anthems of all time.

Stevie Wonder - Talking book

One of the positives of this list is realizing how good some of Wonder's work is. I mainly knew him from some comparatively gimmicky songs growing up in the 1980s, but his classic era stuff is great.

Another day, another incredibly influential #5DebutAlbums50s60s contender.

Led Zeppelin - self titled

Massively important album in the creation of hard rock, and an amazing blues album to boot. Page's guitar and also Plant's delivery feel like a seismic leap forward.
