In my mid 30s I burnt out. What followed was a 10 year period where I rarely played. No lyrics, no music - nada! I was still a musician, an artist - albeit a suppressed one. My voice was stilled for a time, but it broke through louder and stronger than ever. Output is the proof, not the truth.

I like pop music, hell, I like most genres. And I’ve written my share of 3 or 4 chord songs. But these days I find myself looking for dissonance, unexpected turns. As I write I almost instinctively dismiss anything that feels too easy. Maybe I’m just old and grumpy?! 🤷‍♂️

Listening to Aja today. The piano on the title track is a thing of beauty. And Steve Gadd’s drumming just never gets old. The whole line up on that album is simply superb. An album I have never tired of since my first listen, many, many years ago!

And even though I play now only for myself, I still have the most brilliant teachers and mentors encouraging me and sharing the love of music. I’m
still learning and creating, and striving to level up. The cheap still make noise. Sadly it’s all they allow themselves to reach for.

In hindsight this has been an enormous blessing. Even though at times I felt out of place, even outright intimidated, it has impressed on me the value of surrounding myself with brilliance. Never a word of criticism, only encouragement. The criticism, I now know, only came from the cheap seats.

Upon reflection, I can honestly say in every band setting I’ve ever been in, I was the least talented. What I lacked in talent I made up for in effort. I’d rather be lifted up a level or two than dragged down. Better the least of the best, than the best of the least.
