Tyrants view educated citizens as their greatest enemy.

Slaveholders stopped the enslaved from learning to read. Nazis burned books. Dictators censor media.

That’s why Trump is attacking education, science, museums, and the arts – to prevent us from learning.

It's Fascism 101.

With all the various international pressures being exerted on Canada, I wonder if we will finally have a federal election (and dare I say provincial election here in Ontario) where foreign policy is a critical issue?

Interesting days...

Here are changes in total provincial transfers to institutions vs. total provincial spending, in real dollars, indexed to 2006-07. Imagine if spending on PSE had kept pace!

Congratulations to my wonderful colleague Sarah Casteel on being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, one of Canada's highest honours!

Sarah writes about Black and Jewish diaspora literature and visual art with a focus on aesthetic responses to atrocity.

Contributed to @SenateCA study on Canada’s interests and engagement with Africa yesterday. I advocated for:

1) Canada’s diplomatic presence
2) Need for holistic partnerships
3) enhance science and education ecosystems
4) reform our visa system
5) grow @GAC_Corporate expertise

Yes…they have been at higher levels than in the past. The loss of intl students has had a significant knock to budgets which means there is less money for operations. Not a question of capacity, a question of funding to operate which intl students were subsidizing.

International students have always been a normal part of post-secondary in Canada. The present caps and policies at the provincial level are now impacting domestic seat availability. Underfunding means fewer courses and spaces available.
