White House planning meeting:

“We are going to have to lie a lot this Sunday. Who’s willing to lie the most shamelessly?”

“Well, duh. That’s JD.”

“Of course. Get him on every show possible.”

“Done!”

Vance: I’m sure that in the course of his life he has been paid more than $50,000 for services. The question is did he do something illegal.

Stephanopoulos: I’m asking if Homan accepted the $50,000

Vance: Is it illegal to take a payment for doing services? Low income women can’t get food

Pop Quiz!

Every American should know the basics of our Founding, don’t you agree?

The history, and the Constitution itself?

Well, to make sure you know it, and as part of my virtual Democracy Academy, let me give you a quick pop quiz.

This is a map of Kentucky’s bourbon trail.

All the distilleries across the Commonwealth. Touring them is a big draw for tourists.

But now, it’s also a map of Trump’s economic wreckage.

Because his tariffs and ceaseless attacks on Canada are crushing bourbon exports.

This thread is really worth reading! I had no clue about this, seems it should’ve been taught in one of my history courses. 🤔

Believe it or not, the test above—as easy as it was to fail—is actually one of the more straightforward “literacy tests” from the Jim Crow South.

You can read more about them, as well as see if you would’ve passed the Alabama test, by reading today’s newsletter, here:
2-Minute Quiz: How Well Do You Know Your Constitution?
A High-Stakes Test
open.substack.com
davidpepperoh.bsky.social
Now, what if I told you that sometimes, literacy tests were also taken as a group. And even if you passed, if someone else failed in your group, you too failed.

Terrible?

davidpepperoh.bsky.social
BUT, alas…we know that that was one of the tricks of these “tests.”

They were selectively administered and enforced, and “scored” with great discretion—such that Black voters failed far more often than White voters regardless of the answers they provided.

12/
davidpepperoh.bsky.social
I have given this “Quiz” every year to my law school class, and as smart as they have been, none of my students got every question right.

So they would not have qualified to vote in Alabama in 1965…that is, if this test had been consistently enforced.

11/
davidpepperoh.bsky.social
These 12 questions were part of a far longer series of questions a voter in Alabama faced in 1965 when she or he tried to vote.

These were all questions on the 1965 Alabama Literacy Test.

Not kicked off BlueSky…even worse than that!

Failure means you aren’t allowed to vote in the upcoming election, or next year’s midterm election.

Harsh?

Maybe, but also our history.

This was not a pop quiz I wrote.

9/
davidpepperoh.bsky.social
How’d you do? Feel good about your answers?

Ok, be honest…do you think you got them all right?

Now, what if I told you that if you got one answer wrong, you failed the test.

And that there was a major punishment for that failure.

Not just a bad grade in my class…but worse.
