As we observe 'World Day Against the Death Penalty', we want to call attention to perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions about the death penalty - "the death penalty protects no one". It is weaponized against the most vulnerable by politicians looking to advance their careers.

We’re in the midst of a national execution spree. This month could see more executions than any month in the past 20 years.

Abraham J. Bonowitz, the director and co-founder of DPA, told Truthout in an email that, “[u]ntil the trial-level judiciary becomes as compromised as the U.S. Supreme Court, federal death sentences can only be sought under certain circumstances, and they still must be imposed by local juries.”

#VictorJones is more than his worst mistake. He is a survivor of horrific abuse at the Okeechobee School for Boys — abuse the State of Florida has admitted to. Instead of offering healing, the state now seeks to ex*cute him tonight.

Last week, Trump issued an EO directing the government to pursue federal ☠️ sentences in DC — where voters abolished the penalty 44 years ago. Even more alarming: his administration has announced plans to seek ☠️ sentences NATIONWIDE, even in states that ended the practice decades ago.

In 2020 his administration restarted federal ex*cutions after a 17-year pause, k!lling an unprecedented 13 people in just 6 months. He’s furious that Biden spared the lives of 37 men on federal d*ath row, and now he’s determined to ensure the k!lling continues.
