On this day in 1976 Rainbow played at the Kouseinenkin Kaikan Hall in Osaka, Japan. The performance of "Catch the Rainbow" on "On Stage" is from this live show. During the show Ronnie dedicated "16th Century Greensleeves" to Tommy Bolin.

On this day in 1972 Ian Gillan writes a letter to Tony Edwards stating that he is leaving the band on June 30, 1973 after the upcoming tour.

On this day in 1970 Deep Purple played at Lüdenscheid Schützenhalle. The band played as a four-piece as Ritchie had been flown back to London. The audience was not happy and a riot ensued.

On this day in 1971 Deep Purple began recording "Machine Head," their sixth studio album at the Grand Hotel in Montreux, Switzerland. It took them a little over two weeks to finish the album.

On this day in 1967 The Maze released their last single "Catari Catari" on MGM. The B-side was a song called "Easy Street." "Catari Catari" was based on an Italian ballad entitled "Cateri Cateri." Do any of you have a copy of this one? What do you think of this single?

On this day in 1971 the Montreux Casino burned to the ground during a performance by Frank Zappa. Rumor has it that Deep Purple were at the show and wrote a song about it but preliminary research has not recovered any hard evidence of this.
