From cutting the backlog of Veterans waiting for VA benefits, to making it easier for women Veterans to access the health care they’ve earned, customer service and convenience are driving our efforts to improve the department.

When I started at VA, “that’s just the way it is,” had become the norm. But now we’re challenging the status quo to better serve Veterans, because without them, VA wouldn’t exist.

I like to ask VA employees: What’s something you have to do that you think is just stupid? They laugh at first, but then they answer, and we fix it.

If not for Veterans, VA wouldn’t exist. The improvements we’ve achieved at the department are all rooted in stressing that simple fact.

From World War II to Afghanistan, every generation of Veterans has different needs. VA must constantly adapt to serve them all and ensure no one gets left behind.

Veteran suicide is preventable, and VA is increasing outreach to those who need our help. We want Veterans to hear our message loud and clear: you’re not alone and VA help is always within reach.

My goal is to make VA so easy to use that no Veteran will need help to file a claim or access the benefits they’ve earned.

With 20 new VA health care clinics opened since January, we’re expanding access to ensure Veterans get the health care choices they’ve earned. And when eligible Vets can’t come to us, we’ll pay for them to see a non-VA provider.

I’ve visited more than 60 VA clinics since February to talk with Veterans, learn what issues they’re having and what VA facilities can do better. This is key to putting Veterans first.

Our hearts break for the two brave Guardsmen who were shot today and their loved ones. On the eve of Thanksgiving, this is a stark reminder of how thankful we should all be for brave service members and Veterans, such as those hurt today, who put themselves at risk to keep us safe.

VA just housed the largest number of homeless Veterans in seven years. But that’s just part of the solution to keeping Veterans off the streets. It’s the wraparound services VA provides that help keep formerly homeless Veterans stable, healthy, and on the path to self-sufficiency.

Under President Trump, VA puts every dollar where it helps Veterans most. That means no woke social-justice programs or green-energy boondoggles and more health care, faster claims, and better outcomes.

More than 75% of rated VA hospitals earned four or five stars from CMS. We’re working to make that the standard for all VA hospitals across the board.
