When you realize the whole yearly budget for Quantum journal is equal to 8 Nature APCs - and they don't even wreck your paper in proof stage because...there is none

Some statistical features of Haar unitaries can be well approximated in log depth, exponentially faster than previously thought. We give evidence that this is a 'truly quantum' effect by deriving linear lower bounds for orthogonal, Clifford, symplectic, matchgate groups

Will it glue? On short-depth designs beyond the unitary group
We provide a range of results on several groups of broad interest in quantum information science: the Clifford group, the orthogonal group, the unitary symplectic groups, and the matchgate group. For ...

Great conference at Genoa, Italy about "Time in Quantum Theory" (TIQT)😀

I'll use the ocasion to share my related seminar doi.org/10.52843/cas... on our recent paper "Path Integrals from spacetime quantum actions" (doi.org/10.1016/j.ao...).

The topic? Unifying "Quantum time" and Feynman's approach

How fast can quantum circuits compile group designs?Recent work arxiv.org/abs/2407.07754 showed that designs over the n-qubit unitary group can be compiled in logarithmic-in-n depth. Can we similarly build short-depth designs over other groups? In our new paper arxiv.org/abs/2506.16005 we answer no.
No-go theorems for sublinear-depth group designs
Constructing ensembles of circuits which efficiently approximate the Haar measure over various groups is a long-standing and fundamental problem in quantum information theory. Recently it was shown th...

I will be in Madrid in Sept 15 to 19th for the Entangle This VI Conference!

Given that I'll be traveling across the pond I'd love to take that opportunity to visit some other local group in Spain!

Let me know if you're interested and I can plan a trip :)

We also find random Clifford FLO circuits (which are a FLO 3-design), with a provably-optimal number of gates
dgarciamartin.bsky.social
I.e. we provide appropriate distributions for the gates of n-qubit parametrized circuits with an optimal down-to-the-constant factor depth, gate count, and classical computation overhead

In contrast, previous approaches incur unnecessary O(n^3) classical compilation costs, or have suboptimal depths
dgarciamartin.bsky.social
In our paper, we provide quantum circuits to *optimally* sample both active and passive Haar random FLO directly on quantum hardware.

(The angles are sampled according to sine powers, indicated by the circled numbers in the picture)
dgarciamartin.bsky.social
Unitary fermionic linear optics (FLO), or matchgate circuits, are a well studied class of quantum circuits, with many known applications.

In particular, sampling random FLO enables applications such as fermionic classical shadows, random circuit sampling or randomized benchmarking 💫
