I had a Palm Centro. Was perfectly suitable as a dual role semi-smart phone and hockey puck. I threw it at the ground more than once just to demonstrate. Each time, when I picked it back up, it loved me more.

Back around 1998 I hacked an mpeg encoder to compute a frequency weighted peak level for whatever it was fed then used that to set the level of music from my library being transcoded for icecast for me in my house and on the road. I ran this for months. Worked fine. It's not hard.

Yeah ... no ... I don't hear enormous differences in loudness these days while browsing YouTube.

It's so ugly ... I do recommend it highly to people who aren't bothered by that though. Any beginner who's a little nerdy, I would definitely point to Reaper to start.
