Casually waking up in the middle of the night remembering that great crested newts smell like pea shoots or roasted nuts and nobody knows why...

She's already repeatedly begged for cuddles and scratches, snuggled up on my legs of her own volition. Absolute doll. Wasn't expecting her to take to us so quickly and naturally.

Getting a cat for a trial period to make sure she'd be happy in our living space and with our lifestyle. Trying really hard to contain my excitement 🥹 hoping it goes well. Any advice on making a cat comfortable in a new space and with new people?

Y’ALL! Scientists at Schmidt Ocean just captured this rare video of an open-ocean squid caring for its young. That pearl-packed black bag between its tentacles is a brood pouch, each pearl is a developing baby squid (you can see a few hatch out at the end).

Nature is so cool. 🧵

Vintage photograph of a potato field. Was stranded on the side of the road for eight hours (entire night) and starting looking around for pests or disease at 4am. Even in dire situations, the need to be a biologist persists 🫡🌱🥔 #STEM #biologist #fieldwork #artphotography #vintagephotography #potato

Today in relatable science: Gulls making a mysterious daily trip that turned out to be to a potato chip factory
A map of flight paths emanating from breeding colony of gulls, with this caption: Early on, LifeWatch noticed something odd. Most gulls were making daily trips to Mouscron, a city on the French border 65 km away. They went to investigate and found the birds bingeing on discarded snacks at the Roger & Roger potato factory.

I'm now physically at my worst but finally have a diagnosis. An obvious one I'd suspected for a while. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTs) is sometimes mild and people can cope by increasing fluid and salt intake but sometimes there are uncommon symptoms that can make it difficult 4/5

The weakness got worse, migraines were appearing weekly and soon became a reliably daily occurrence. Nausea followed and some days were really bad. Some days I can't lift my head. But some days I was okay, it was tolerable and I thought I'd be OK. I pushed myself too hard and it cost me a PhD. 3/5

I was a junior athlete, playing on my local handball team and running dozens of miles a week without breaking a sweat. Slowly, I noticed I was getting light-headed and started fainting after running. It took a decade before I got a diagnosis which is horrific in itself when you're getting weaker 2/5

During some of the ok days, I've been able to sit and do research, write, try to figure out a sort of routine even though every day is unpredictable. I have managed to write a 1st novel draft & finally submitted an MSc dissertation. Here's to the future, and finding stability in myself. 5/5 #POTs

Not sure there's enough talk about going from able-bodied to disabled out the blue. Like it's not as shocking when it happens to people doing dangerous jobs because the risk is known but the fact of the matter is, you can wake up one day and be ill and that's not talked about enough. 1/5

You were suggested to me by Bluesky if that helps.
