This made me cry. I was once the slower girl. (No one was diagnosing or treating exercise-induced asthma in the ‘70s.) My PE teacher would mock me and encourage the other girls to do the same. So happy to see things have changed, at least for that girl.

My mom was a 19 year old who built airplanes during the war. I’m often grateful these days neither of them lived to see the day their families and neighbors joyfully welcomed in the people they’d sacrificed their young adulthood to keep out of this country.

My dad tried to enlist in the US Air Corps in early ‘42, but was turned down for flat feet. So the regular Army drafted him and eventually marched him from Normandy to Czechoslovakia. But first, he guarded the scenic coast of Maine from invasion. They also serve who stand watch in Cabot Cove.
