Just finished Hades 2. Here are my thoughts on the ending!

Hades 2 Spoilers , of course

Panel 1: Zagreus (as Spongebob) says "Wanna see me prevent a family conflict from ending in bloodshed by having them resolve it through peaceful means?", referring to Hades, Persephone, Zeus, and Demeter behind him.

Panel 2: Zagreus (once again as Spongebob) points his thumb to Hades (as he appears in Hades 2), Melinoe, and Chronos behind him saying "Wanna see me do it again?"

I saw a LOT of people in the Supergiant server express dissatisfaction with the ending. One even likening it with Steven Universe

but if you put it that way, I kinda get what they were going for...?

I remember Supergiant games devs saying they wanted to write the Gods not just as gods but more as a Huge, REALLY dysfunctional family. And the Diamonds in SU were written kind of the same way (plus a few flashy battles and epic clashes and a war)

and viewing it through that lens, it kinda makes sense that they wanted the conflict to be ended that way, not through just killing each other, but the way a family ought to have, by resolving it peacefully and reconciling with each other.

And Zag WOULD have wanted to resolving the conflict that way because he's already had his fair share of fighting family LOL. He probably didn't want it to resolve the same way every time, through violence. And of course we might have a hard time seeing it that way. The Diamonds were Intergalactic Dictators, and Chronos is a Tyrant, but in the case of Hades, it kinda makes sense because well... they're gods.

In Greek Myth, murder is typically the solution they go for when it comes to conflict resolution 😭, but in both cases, the protag ended up being a person who wanted to resolve it through peaceful means for everyone's benefit.

If you view the antagonists as just BBEG's, then sure, it might make more sense to just kill them. Shatter the Diamonds. Death to Chronos. But if you view the stories through the lens of them just both being really cranky relatives that you want to make amends with, like how the creators of both SU and Hades did, then the best method is to... you know... make amends

even though it's a very hard decision. Many people and the characters certainly hold that sentiment, but Zagreus and Steven didn't
...

...So what I'm saying is... Zagreus is Steven Universe 😭
