T-minus 3 weeks: data λ code unconference
If you were in a room with 75 data practitioners and builders, what would you want to hash out?
Oct 7, 2-5pm will be the first data unconference I've seen, where we'll find out what we all care about.

Most data events are just people talking at you from a stage. We're doing something different. This is practitioner-led: no agenda until you make one, no slide decks, just data engineers and builders…

Attending the #PositConf today the inspect-ai (open-source python package) was mentioned in 7/9 talks I attended. It provides an evaluation framework for LLMs.
Anyone here been using it or something else for evals?

Most tech events optimize for headcount. We're optimizing for depth with our data λ code unconference.
I'm personally reviewing every RSVP to build a room of practitioners ready to:
💡 Share real technical challenges
💡 Propose sessions on problems they're solving
💡 Engage thoughtfully in discussions

One customer-facing data disaster costs weeks of debugging and lost trust.
Strategic reviews can take only a few minutes. (at least if you use Recce)

Easiest way to get a stakeholder to ghost you, ask them:
"Can someone review this data change?"
Stakeholders will ignore abstract requests. Show them how their dashboard changes or give concrete examples about why it matters to them.
Send screenshots + the "so what" to get their attention.

20% of code changes cause 80% of data fires. (aka the Pareto Principle)
I've found that data teams either validate everything manually or have to trust automation completely. Both fail.

dbt tests catch schema violations. Observability tools catch volume drops. Nothing catches when your churn model suddenly thinks 90% of customers are at risk because of a join logic change.

Pick one pipeline that's burned the team before. Something customer-facing where being wrong hurts.
Run collaborative data reviews on just that. Track what gets caught.
Build the habit before scaling the process. 💪

Super interested into seeing the performance of the new open-source model from OpenAI. Still thinking about how I can start running something locally, I'm getting a bit sheepish about giving so many agents access to my systems

Wrote a blog post about a framework for catching the dreaded "silent failures" before your customers do.
I've found these errors to be more costly than anything a test or observability system can catch.
