The broom, dustpan, and the fuse box you can see in the drawing — those are very typical items you’ll find in a Ukrainian shared hallway. As for the neighbours, this is the image that came to mind: a little rat without a phone asking the sleepy me, “anything on the news?” — meaning

That’s when we all step out into the shared hallway — because of the so-called “three-wall rule”, it’s considered safer there than staying in the bathroom or anywhere else inside the flat.

Usually we just sit on chairs or a bench.

Hmm… over the past three years I’ve moved between several apartments, and somehow I’ve met almost all my neighbours not with a friendly pie (I’m not very sociable when I’m living somewhere temporarily, lol), but in the hallway at night — during missile attacks.
