The Year of Magical Thinking (Joan Didion) was overindulged rich white lady BS.

(And I love her other work)

This is a very niche collection and I will now be on the lookout for you

Fuck. Jane Goodall, Diane Keaton, and now Tanqueray? 😩

I’m actually pretty non tech, too. I semi reluctantly use our course management system, but that’s about it.

Yes- I think this makes sense, and thank you. I’m not sure that it’s always the best decision, even for research. There’s got to be a cost/benefit consideration. But early days still.

(To be clear, this is not my personal research. I research learning. These are my students doing their own projects that do not inform my work one way or the other.)

Yes, definitely. We’re building a course on AI and these are the most crucial decisions in play, IMO
drceleste.bsky.social
Now it’s in writing, so it’s legit

Which means my students can do way more sampling which leads to much more significant results.

This work helps inform water quality and ecosystem health

I know, I already know …

But #AI 🤖 is doing my students a huge miracle. They’re doing a plankton survey, which takes forever and is marginally complete because lots of cells are fragmented or overlapping so they can’t be ID’d.

AI can give much more accurate abundance and diversity estimates

Today, 3 or so years later, I was bringing the 🐰 out to the yard and glimpsed a faint web. Another widow is there this year, under the same railing. In my charlotte’s web story, I’ll claim it’s her granddaughter setting out to continue the web of life. I wish her well. ❤️
drceleste.bsky.social
Anyway, she eventually had egg sacks and I could tell she’d gotten smaller. I frantically googled the lifespan of black widows (1 year, but up to 3 if lucky.) She disappeared sometime in the cold and dark of late winter.

A few years ago, a black widow made her home under the front porch railing. Away enough from where hands would grasp, I decided she was safe there. Shy and reclusive by nature, I never saw her out and about - but I would frequently check on her in her home under the railing. 🧵

Oh I’m on my way 🏃‍♀️
