Surely "concerned citizens" rather than "right wing demonstrators". You have to tread very very carefully with people as sensitive as the political right in case you offend them & they bring the whole force of the state down upon you.
Yet it is as absurd for the Left to look at humanity & see only good, as it is for the Right to see only evil. We help people in spite of who they are not because of who they are are. Compassion is only compassion if you apply universally, to your enemies as much as to your friends.
There is no need to fall out over this. No need to take against me & consign me to outer darkness. I would conjecture that there is almost certainly more that we agree about than disagree. I may be a pessimist but that does not lead me to deprecate the rights of others.
What we are - & what we think we are - are seldom the same. The human capacity for self deception is limitless. The human psyche is a tumult of incoherence & contradiction. Even the most rational of us struggle to be rational all the time, & there is no royal road to personal or political salvation.
As I wrote this, I knew that someone would object in this way. That is assuming anyone ever read the comment: this is BlueSky after all. All things are subjective, yet everyone is certainly biased, almost everyone is some kind of bigot, & many would say the majority are stupid or evil or both.
No one considers themselves to be a bigot, any more than anyone really considers themselves to be biased or evil or ugly or stupid, not deep down, not beyond the self deprecation & false humility. People lie as much to themselves as they do to other people.
