You have to assume all context you give an AI company is being sold to brokers. Your personal finance data. Every medical question you ask. Your notes.

Now how will all of that be used by corporations and government subjugating you?

Hopefully this year we got more practical local options.

Started collecting inspiring personal sites recently and yours was the first one! Excited to read the case study.

Also AI has been helpful for managing dagger pipelines (which run on Depot). Not suggesting going that far, but just saw you've tried before and didn't enjoy that setup. Once it's set up though we don't touch it regularly.

We've been using and getting a lot of value out of depot. depot.dev and alternatively this idea is pretty appealing given how unreliable Github Actions can be youtu.be/gcwzWzC7gUA?.... Basically automate running CI locally w/ sign off.

As a parent I've been ahead of the trend ditching music recommendation algorithms. All recommendations are useless to me.

And not saying you can't do any of this in the browser I just think it's invites a lot of incidental complexity depending on your reasons for choosing local-first.

Web is great for light offline/read-only scenarios like downloading recent emails. Native is better for heavy offline-first in-the-field scenarios.
January 9, 2026 at 9:46 PM
I think it primarily depends on the use case. For highly-collaborative apps I don't think local-first make sense generally. Otherwise single-user syncing can be offloaded to iCloud/Dropbox.

Was using claude to help debug my Jellyfin (video streaming) setup and it's like "I see you're currently streaming Blade Runner" after looking the the live logs haha. But fr a trip to be chatting in realtime about the movie playing on my TV.

As much as I like local-first I think browsers are not the best place to build your local-first apps. Lots of ice skating up hill vs shipping a native app that can readily access the file system and avoid any browser limitations.

Yeah this is my go to as well. A lot of people don't care enough. They blew through a jest tutorial one time and now they think it's the only way.

Got to do the fun uncle thing where your kid and all the cousins hold on to your legs while you drag them around the house.

Finally setup bazzite.gg and it's such a great offramp from Windows. Tried Arch/Omarchy just because and it was lacking especially in the gaming department.

It’s high level, but probably enough to help understand if it’s interesting for your desired outcome.
