Damian Lillard had surgery on his Achilles on May 2nd. The NBA RTP timeline typically lands ~ 10-12 months post-surgery. Most (not all..i.e.Durant) players have some performance drop. So if he joins the Warriors, he could theoretically be playing in March / April. #DubNation

Kevon Looney overcame multiple severe hip injuries to play 290 straight games. He was a steadying presence for the team. He won 3 NBA rings. He did all the dirty work. He never complained. He shut down Sabonis. He rebounded like no other. We will miss him. #DubNation

3. Style of play in today's NBA: The game is physically taxing in a different way than year's past. Players are significantly more explosive and agile than in the past. Larger and larger players are expected to play like guards. As a result, soft tissues are stressed unlike in year's past

Players have much more mileage on their bodies by the time they enter the league; increasing the risk of severe, soft tissue injury. If you have not read it before, read the article from @baxterholmes.bsky.social from a few years ago that captures this perfectly:

1. Youth sports / AAU basketball: This generation of players come into the league with significantly more mileage than players of generations past. Year-round AAU basketball at younger and younger ages (i.e single sport specialization) has been show to tremendously increase injury risk.

Lots of talk about the Achilles injuries (and soft tissue injuries) impacting NBA players. Here is where I think the problem lies (it's multi-factorial) in this 🧵:

Brady..sorry for the delayed response. It's multi-factorial but the fact that there wasn't some sort of mis-step that caused it its likely a combination of age and workload
