It was a great pleasure to be on the @footpolpodcast.bsky.social again to discuss various issues involving Latin American and the World Cup, including the FIFA peace prize, The USA armed intervention in Venezuela, Mexico’s hosting of the WC and fears of ICE, fan safety, potential protests etc
Recent headlines have called for a boycott of the US as a 2026 World Cup host.

Our new FootPol episode with @drpetewatson.bsky.social & Roger Magazine digs into the politics behind 2026: visas, borders, Latin America, fan access, and FIFA power. 🎧 www.buzzsprout.com/2253650/epis...

The unerring knack students have for asking for references to be written urgently during the busiest times of year 😂. Two requests on a Sunday when I’m marking all day

On the subject of World Cup boycotts, this is a story which ought to be much better known: why African countries decided not to compete for a place at the 1966 tournament. One of Fifa's most shameful moments, which hardly ever gets a mention.

The BBC's Piers Edwards explains the little-known story behind the African boycott to the 1966 World Cup, the only World Cup in history to have been snubbed by an entire continent.

interesting to see that a potential postdoctoral candidate I might be supervising would be earning more than me should they gain the award. That seems odd.

The Jacks drop was poor but not quite as abysmal as TMS made out. Worth remembering the TMS box is composed of famously abysmal (and self -confessed too) fielders in Tufnell and Hartley in particular, with Aggers not far behind in the old fast bowler bracket. Zaltzman might be the best in the box

England have had plenty of bad teams before, and bad coaches. This team might be the stupidest or the least game aware I’ve seen. Smith’s monumental blunder joins a long list of stupid cricket under Baz
