''Kasibba was the holder of her own human rights'

Lucy explains that people had forgotten that Kasibba was the holder of her own Human Rights. The original teams on the wards had forgotten this, and jut about all of her rights had been removed from her.
The teams learned that her 'bad behaviour' was communication of her distress, and very valid/

www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... is one link to Kasibba's story. It's daunting to read, and what a total mess, eh? So many people describing Kasibba in dreadful and frankly racist ways, before people rethought autism, learned new perspectives, and made a huge difference/
Autistic woman wrongly locked up in mental health hospital for 45 years
“Kasibba”, who is non-verbal and had no family to speak for her, was one of hundreds wrongly detained.

Andrew Reece & Lucy Dunstan, next. Bios can be found at www.atautism.org/at-autism-co...

Andrew begins by talking about Kasibba, and the journey to get her out of hospital. Huge fees, stress & effort against barriers, but Camden managed it. How?../

Ruth Moyse talks about her past research on autistic children and schools. Every child who wasn't able to attend school said they wished they could attend. But they can't do it. It's impossible for them.

It's not school 'refusal'. They can't access the school.

Today, cheering on the speakers at #AutismArtOfThePossible conference. They'll be discussing how to change people's attitudes and views... how to get people into homes, not hospitals.... how to embrace change in systems... and Damian Milton will be talking about participatory research/

The research finding no increased 'risk' of autism if acetaminophen taken during pregnancy is available, eg this study. Not suppressed.

The narrative that autism is something to be feared and prevented is offensive and uneducated scaremongering.
