A lovely lunch out to celebrate 5 years of the SoliLab, tinged with a little sadness as it coincides with one of the lab originals, Caroline, leaving us for bigger and better things! All the very best Dr Babisz and here’s to another 5 with this talented team!

One of my super talented postdocs took a photo of one of my super talented PhD students and won a prize!
We provide and maintain the technologies that our scientists use every day to carry out potentially life-changing cancer research. Image competition winner Dr Irina Titkova told us about the role the Centre has played in her career development.

The SoliLab celebrated Christmas a little early this year 🎄. A chilly, but lovely light trail, and a couple of 🍷 (for warmth, of course 😉).

Effective mentorship in the academy isn't just kind - it's strategic. We strengthen our academic community when we support and elevate our junior colleagues. We create a supportive community with a culture of collaboration and innovation. I benefited from having precisely this kind of mentors.

Tamsin Wilcock is our newest recruit. Tamsin is working on a hugely challenging project but made major inroads since starting in June. KinETICS (Kinase Exact Tagging of In Cell Substrates) is our method of delivering an ATP analogue to live cells to find direct kinase substrates in situ - so cool!

Continuing the SoliLab introductions…Laura Knight joined the lab in 2023 as a MRC-DTP PhD student. Laura is working on the DNA damage response kinase, CHK2. She has identified 2 recurrent, cancer associated mutations which we hypothesise might rewire the DDR signalling pathways.

Now for Dr Irina Titkova. Irina is unravelling a novel mitotic pathway, which our data suggests is used by cancer cells to untangle tangled DNA to safely transit mitosis. This tumour-specific vulnerability is a potentially therapeutic actionable target which is an active area of research in our lab.

Next up, Caitlin Leo @caitlinsolilab.bsky.social - who has had to master both chemistry and biology in the first 2 years of her PhD! Caitlin has made a conformation-specific allosteric kinase inhibitor. I wish I could tell you more 🤐 but for now… exciting things are coming!

Let me introduce you to my brilliant team!
Caroline Babisz took a leap of faith on a new PI back in 2021 and has recently put down her pipettes to write up her thesis. Caroline has taken a multidisciplinary approach to understand the role of kinase activation loop modification on substrate selection
