In learning Motivational Interviewing a couple of critical thoughts come to mind:
1) We generally try to manipulate more than communicate
2) Accurately empathizing with others is crucial to human connection, we often fail to step out of our egos long enough to create this connection

Something I learned working with elite MMA fighters: 4) Let the experts you bring into your life help you see your faults. Ask them their thoughts on what to improve. Champions would implement feedback from the coaches and teammates they trusted.

Something I learned working with elite MMA fighters: 1) Your biggest goals will require daily effort. Most of that effort will be painful. 2) You are the only one capable of keeping you on track. Your team matters and they can’t be responsible for you, they can only show up for you.

As a performance psychologist, I spend a lot of time teaching the skill of focus. One thing people don’t realize is that focusing solely on your breath for at least 3 minutes a day can greatly improve your ability to concentrate.
