Realised that I’m now treating funny viral videos in the same way footballers celebrate goals —

1) initial joy,
2 sudden panic it might be AI/offside
3) lengthy investigation as joy saps away
4) conclusion, joy modulated through fatigue if proven legit/onside, but angry and gutted if AI/offside

At almost 2,000 years old, this child’s wooden toy sword is a remarkable survival from Roman times!

Found in the living quarters of the cavalry barracks at Vindolanda fort in 2017. Dated c.120 AD. Chesterholm Museum 📷 by me

My photo shows a Roman-era wooden toy sword made from oak. It is dark brown in colour, displayed against a cream and pale green background. It is carved to look like an adult sword, with a semi-circular handle, a blade with pointed tip, and a semi-circular guard embellished with a centrally-set oval polished stone. The wood is remarkably well-preserved except for a break across the hilt. Excavated in 2017 from the cavalry barracks at Vindolanda, a fort on the Roman Empire’s northern frontier. Dated c. AD 120.

yeah, this is hegseth straightforwardly announcing that it is free play time for bigots in the ranks. and together with his comments on standards, he clearly wants to purge as many women, black and brown people as he can from the armed services. a white man's military.

Hegseth: "We are overhauling an inspector general process that has been weaponized, putting complainers and poor performers in the driver seat. We are doing the same with the equal opportunity policies. No more frivolous complaints, no more anonymous complains ... no more walking on eggshells."

To be honest, "bit the shit outta someone" isn't an uncommon phrase after a late evening down the pub.

The #rwc2025 was amazing. I went into the tournament really only knowing Ilona Maher and Portia Woodman, both from the Olympics. Coming out of it, I’m now just as big a fan of Ellie Kendall, Sophie de Goede, Asia Hogan-Rochester, and Raquel Kochhann.

Can’t wait! C’mon Canada!

It all comes down to this. For three years, the Red Roses have dreamt of this day. Whilst for over a century, Canadian rugby has been building to this. So where is the 2025 Rugby World Cup Final going to be won and lost, and just how big could the impact of this one match be?

I can’t believe I forgot Dandelion’s cravat!
Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove, also known as “Dandelion,” stands ready to perform for his adoring audience.

I'm still on my Hero Forge kick, but have been replaying "Witcher 3" lately, so here's my take on some of the main characters. From L-R: Yennefer, Ciri, Geralt, Dandelion, and Triss.
Yennefer of Vengerberg, Ciri, Geralt of Rivia, Dandelion, and Triss Merigold from the "Witcher" stories and games. Made in Hero Forge.

...but that's also a great way to lose your sword and possibly get dragged out of the saddle, if it gets stuck.

Anyway, I've been on a bit of a Sub-Roman Britain kick lately, thanks to a project I'm working on, and decided to rewatch "King Arthur" to amuse myself. And boy, was I amused.

The sword is a Roman spatha, which is specifically designed for cavalry. Like most cavalry swords, it's intended to be SWUNG at an opponent as you gallop past (this is why cavalry sabers are curved).

Arthur is not only using his weapon, in the EXACT SCENARIO IT WAS DESIGNED FOR, wrongly...

(content warning: PG-13 movie violence)

In this scene, Arthur flips his sword so he can stab a "Woad" (presumably a Pict) as he gallops past. I know reverse grip is cool, but that's not how you use a sword like that. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNOT...

I have a love/hate relationship with the 2004 film "King Arthur." On the one hand, it probably ignited my interest in Arthuriana and the historical basis for it. On the other hand, the more I got into the subject, the more ridiculous the movie became. And I just noticed a new piece of ridiculousness

On 27th August 2015, The Shepherd's Crown, the last book Sir Terry Pratchett completed before he died, was published.

To mark the ten year anniversary, we have a message from Rob Wilkins:
It’s been ten years since the publication of The Shepherd’s Crown, the last book Terry Pratchett completed before he died. Once the spine on this one was cracked, there were no more new Pratchetts to look forward to, and I know a lot of Discworld readers who were, understandably, with that sad reality in mind, reluctant to finish - or even start - this one because it felt like the final closing of a door.

But I also know that Terry wanted his books to be read and enjoyed far more than he wanted them kept on a shelf. And as time passes it becomes ever more apparent how much the Discworld books reward re-visiting, perpetually revealing something new, literary gems Terry had hidden away for a second or third, or even more, re-read. Every Pratchett is to some degree an unread Pratchett, including the ones you’ve already enjoyed and including The Shepherd’s Crown.

So the greatest way to honour Terry’s legacy is to pull that book you’ve been saving off the shelf, make a nice cup of tea and settle down to read the story he wrote for you. Enjoy.

I just discovered that you can actually make panthers in Hero Forge, so I updated Guenhwyvar accordingly.
The drow ranger Drizzt Do'Urden and his faithful companion, the panther Guenhwyvar, in a gloomy forest.

I’ve been a little obsessed with #heroforge lately (just look at my pfp) and here are some creations I’m particularly proud of.
Gandalf, from “Lord of the Rings,” based off of Tolkien’s description of him (blue hat, white hair and beard, black boots, and grey and silver robes). My Jedi OC, Tobias Vandren. Minsc (and Boo!) from “Baldur’s Gate.” Drizzt Do’Urden and company, from the “Legend of Drizzt” novels. From L-R, Guenhwyvar the panther (or as close as Hero Forge can get to a panther), Catti-Brie, Drizzt, Regis (front), Wulfgar (back), Bruenor, Jarlaxle, and Artemis Entreri.

grim catharsis to stomach 20+ years of the dumbest dummies parroting, "why did he spend so much time on this?" talking points, only for Lucas to have made one of the most prescient sci-fi films of the 1990s in the long run

Welp. Apple snuck something dirty in our phones last night.

Settings > Apps > (pick an app) > Siri > Learn From this App

TOGGLE OFF.

You have to go through each app. My garage app, my BANKING APPS, others had that turned on automatically. 😡
Screenshot of a phone setting highlighting the “learn from this app” invasion of privacy, courtesy of Siri, toggled on. The app is a password manager, which is concerning.

*peers out window* Ooh, it looks nice and sunny out! I should go for a walk!
*checks weather app, see it feels like 13F outside* Um, maybe not.
