Drop the turnip recipe!

How do they compare to pickled radishes?

That living death deck was a thing of beauty

Some great examples. Chinese history, myths, legends, religions, etc. are a gold mine for content for TTRPGs.

Yeah, what I've seen of it is a lot better than this... That said, I'm currently running a campaign in a world inspired by the late Ming, and have had to homebrew basically everything because there's so little existing TTRPG material that is any good for these kinds of settings.

You joke but there's literally a thing in here about how you can use chopsticks as a weapon. Extremely cringe.

Totally forgot to mention how great the music in this staging was. So many great West African bops. Where has Yemi Alade been my whole life? youtu.be/u8HlKw24208?...

This is probably true, but it makes the "uh there just isn't enough written on those other countries" ring even more hollow lol

The art in here is fine, I guess? It would have been great to see some East Asian artists represented. If WotC was able to get solely Chinese artists for Portal: Three Kingdoms in 1999, surely TSR could have gotten even a single Japanese artist in '85?

The best thing in here is probably the campaign events and encounters random tables (which is what inspired me to buy this book in the first place). This is extremely helpful for GMs. Why is nothing like this in the 5E DMG???

There's also a totally crazy martial arts mechanic in here that simulates martial arts fighting down to the level of specific types of kicks, punches, grapples, etc... Why are we trying to shoehorn this into a TTRPG, let alone AD&D??

Compare to Modify Memory from 5E, which is **5th level**, and only lets you alter an existing memory, not introduce a totally new one... and doesn't grant advantage for anything... and gives advantage on the WIS save to the target if you're fighting them lol
dvdsn.bsky.social
Why are AD&D spells so batshit though?? This *3rd level* spell lets you to implant a totally false memory in a target's mind... the memory can be 10 mins long per caster level (so min. of 30 mins). The target gets to make the AD&D equivalent of a WIS save, w/ disadvan if they're unconscious. What??

This bit from the designer is extremely funny. Brother, there is no pre-modern civilization that has produced as much written material about itself as imperial China, you just are oblivious because so little of it was translated in the 80s.
Excerpt from "Oriental Adventures"

Just acquired a copy of the AD&D expansion book "Oriental Adventures"... Which honestly is not anywhere near as problematic as I expected it to be, considering it was published in 1985.
The cover of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons expansion "Oriental Adventures." It displays a samurai on a horse? Kirin? Falkor the White Luck Dragon type creature? attacking a ninja.
