Actions to be taken:

• monitor exposed people for 10–14 days
• if symptoms appear, self-isolate and seek testing
• health-care workers in affected areas should ask patients with flu-like symptoms about recent contact with animals.

Widespread detections of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) in wild birds, and outbreaks in poultry across the EU/EEA, increase the risk of human exposure.

The overall risk to the public remains low, but key actions matter.

🚨 Remember! 🚨

Preventive measures, such as:
💪 vaccination
🙌 frequent handwashing
↔️ maintaining physical distance
👥 avoiding large gatherings
💨 proper ventilation
😷 wearing masks in healthcare settings

can help reduce transmission & protect those at high risk.

🌬️ This winter, influenza, SARS-CoV-2 and RSV are all expected to circulate - increasing pressure on healthcare systems. Clear communication on vaccination, hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette & staying home when ill remains essential.

Press release: bit.ly/3JZtkH2
Threat Assessment Brief: Assessing the risk of influenza for the EU/EEA in the context of increasing circulation of A(H3N2) subclade K
Circulating respiratory viruses, including influenza viruses, SARS-CoV-2 and RSV, all contribute to pressure on healthcare systems during winter in the EU/EEA.

🏥 Healthcare and long-term-care settings

#ECDC advises:
• strengthen infection-prevention and control
• ensure early testing
• use antivirals promptly for those at risk
• consider prophylaxis in outbreaks
• apply mask use for staff and visitors during periods of high respiratory-virus activity
November 20, 2025 at 3:51 PM
We recommend vaccination without delay for:
• adults 65+
• pregnant people
• people with chronic conditions
• immunocompromised individuals
• residents of LTCFs or closed settings
• healthcare workers & staff working with vulnerable groups
November 20, 2025 at 3:51 PM
📊 Risk levels from the #ECDC assessment

• Moderate risk for the general population
• High risk for adults 65+, people with chronic conditions, immunocompromised individuals, pregnant people and residents of long-term-care or other closed settings

• A(H3N2) subclade K shows significant antigenic divergence from this year’s vaccine strains

• A mismatch is suggested in lab analyses - but vaccines are still expected to protect against severe disease

• Preliminary data from UK indicate similar vaccine effectiveness compared to recent seasons
November 20, 2025 at 3:51 PM
This earlier start increases the risk of widespread transmission in winter - especially for people at higher risk of severe disease.
