Abhijit Banerjee is currently Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Esther Duflo is currently the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She also holds the Poverty and Public Policy chair at the Collège de France and serves as president of the Paris School of Economics.

As pioneers in development economics and founders of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), Duflo and Banerjee's groundbreaking work, recognized by the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2019, has reshaped how economists address poverty, inequality, and policy evaluation worldwide.

We are thrilled to welcome Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee as the new Lemann Foundation Professors to our department, beginning in the summer of 2026.

Purpose of the visit of the SNS Lab was to provide the students, who are studying Behavioral Economics in class, with practical insights into the field.

His thesis studies the effects of prioritization in primary healthcare services in Chile, how to deter improper prescription of sick leave by physicians within the Chilean social security system, and effect of universal insurance provision in Mexico on mothers’ labor supply.

This semester, I’m teaching my 10,000th student in Econ 101 (Micro 1).
Over the past 8 years, it’s been a lot of fun and a privilege to teach the fundamentals of economics - scarcity, demand and supply, opportunity costs, game theory and externalities.

No regression analysis, no policy briefs: just a night where the only curve we talked about was the one in a wine glass. 🙂
