Why kill your lawn?

(okay y’all since I can’t fit all this on my torso, I’m making this post explaining why I hate lawns + my approach to land management)

Lawns began as a status symbol for aristocrats to show off the fact that they didn’t need to use their land to grow food.

Today, more than 40 million acres (>62,500 square miles) of land in the usa is wasted on turf grass.

Turf grass may look “green” but it provides nothing to the ecosystem while requiring more maintenence and resources than native plant species

Lawns and mainstream landscaping represent ecological destruction, classism, and colonization.

Why native plants?

Mainstread landscaping relies on turf grass and non-native ornamental plant species from overseas. The landscaping industry has facilitated not only the spread of invasive species, but mass ecological destruction for profit.

Non-native plant species pose a risk to ecosystems by outcompeting native species and disrupting the landscape wildlife relies on.

Populations in an ecosystem have evolved together and developed intricate interactions. They are dependent on one another for survival and dependent on checks and balances in the ecosystem to keep and one species from dominating. When non-native species are introduced to an ecosystem by humans, they often dominate because local species haven’t evolved mechanisms to keep them in check.

Native plants provide endless ecosystem services, from supporting native pollinators and wildlife while minimizing pest species like mosquitos and ticks, to storing more carbon and helping to combat climate change.

Why leave the leaves?

When fall comes and the leaves drop off your trees, I encourage you to leave them where they are.

Leaving the leaves allows them to break down and put carbon back into the soil. Leaves sent to landfills release greenhouse gasses and contribute to climate change. Removing leaves from your yard will also leave your soil malnourished and requiring more amendments.

Leaves left where they are provide shelter for native wildlife. Many native insects, including fireflies, rely on leaf litter during their larval phases. See fewer fireflies every year? Its cause of all the grass

If you must rake the leaves (because you’re subject to the tyranny of an HOA or landlord or something) at least pile them somewhere in your yard so they can be composted. If your neighbors are getting rid of their leaves, you can intercept them and use the excess leaves for composting. Leaves are a great source of carbon for composting and you can begin composting your kitchen scraps as well, diverting more organic material from the landfill.
