I know there are a lot of fundraisers, but we've been at this 8 months for a Black woman owned small press, and there are many reasons it would really help to rally and close this up.

A senior intelligence official heard my name mentioned as the source of some unlikely information, and said "Wait - Emily Bell? Not the one who worked here years ago?"

The person said yes, and he said, "That's all I need to know. You can trust every word that comes out of that woman's mouth."
What is the best compliment you ever received? Putting aside whether or not you believed it.

This is why I love birthdays and the New Year so much. They're symbolic, but sometimes we need what are really - reminders.

We can listen. We can be kind. We can care. We can be thoughtful. We can lift each other.

I hope we can all make that our pledge in 2026.

Re: What Joyce just said about meanness, "without care" is key.

People justify all sorts of soul-crushing cruelty because of some little justification.

It's supposed to be if a human falls, we help them up. We ask first, Are you ok? Then, What happened?

Not lol yay let's all jump on them.

People forget there are flesh-and-blood people behind the social media accounts (not counting bots).

We are becoming meaner, harsher and blunter.

I have to say that 2025 is the year of mean-ness.

Where mean-ness is validated and people lash out at each other, without care (and this is just social media).

If you agree that writers of privilege are completely, knowingly spreading disinformation and protecting abusers, and you have privilege, please don't be complicit. Please don't be silent.

If you don't agree, I mean, I've stated direct proof and people are willfully and aggressively ignoring it.

I wish people cared about writers supporting racists and abusers as much as they cared about readers pirating books.

Zero glib; I think about a world where writers of privilege considered disinformation or protecting abusers bad and it crushes me that they don't.

Have to work hard not to spiral.

The pre-programming against evaluation is killing us. Please consider:

Writer ≠ Good
Publisher ≠ Bad
Popular ≠ Kind or Right
Not For Profit ≠ Good Intentions or Not Profiting
For Profit ≠ Motivated by Profit or Profiting
Bias ≠ Bad
Gatekeeping ≠ Bad
Boundaries ≠ Good
Holding a Line ≠ Solidarity

Well, I have never declined as many NetGalley requests.

Trying to only approve accounts who are both human and also a book reviewer or curator.

There's so much we need to get serious about.

I've been thinking a lot about genre culture. Was watching a show, and all the ads were this unsettling combination of hyperrealistic unsettling mind-hyping slop and just like, lol / meanness / harm. And holiday ads usually go for the fake kind vibe, but not now. They all feel so *mean*.

I LOVE IT. ALL OF IT.

The art, the artists, our world together.
And here's the gorgeous full artwork, by Ellen Burnett. ❤️

I'm really looking forward to talking all about these three upcoming novellas, plus a secret collaborative project to be unveiled in early February.

I'm grateful and glad we're still here to do this work.

Ok, they aren't following me.

But think how racist their feed must be to not see right in front of them the number of BIPOC W/QTI fundraising to *eat*.

Or maybe they do see it.

And are doing what ... nothing? Because that doesn't monetize like booing AI does?

And we're all fine with that?

- I don't believe her because I heard some men said it wasn't true.

- I believe her but I don't want to risk anything of my own.

If people are asking, why are they fine with the answers?

If they aren't asking, why not?

Please think through things like this. Please.

Anyway, I don't know if anyone ever asks these popular genre writers.

"Emily Bell says there's an abuse ring running genre that's having real consequences, especially to Black and Indigenous W/QTI."

What would their answer be:
November 23, 2025 at 6:06 PM
I am not perfect. Not going to be.

Sometimes I struggle with misunderstandings and triggers. Being mentally "disabled" means you "aren't able" to do everything most people can.

My being human is ZERO excuse for what they're doing to me and my community, when I've been right and stood by it.
November 24, 2025 at 6:36 PM
In my case, genre is still trying to mass discredit and deplatform me (and doing a damn good job) for saying genre has a core of racism, misogynoir, misogyny, ableism, and bullying protected by an abuse ring - that is both hurting people and preventing us from paying writers more.

So, one question:
November 24, 2025 at 6:29 PM
I don't think the people who need to hear this are following me anymore, but maybe they're following you. Maybe you can say it.

There's going to have to be a day when a woman speaking when a man tells her to stop is not a career-ending sentence.

Don't be complicit.
November 24, 2025 at 6:21 PM
One of the best things we can all do is stop allowing the conflation of following and solidarity.

Standing together to protect abuse is not standing together.

It's just not.

Stand with artists, stand with truthtelling, stand with bravery.

And, if you can, join the people saying it.

We can.

I'm about to take Sexy Garlic off of NetGalley, and I truly want to say thank you to each of you who gave it a chance.

I ended up with a 2.3 star avg, a note that one of my stories reads like Ted Chiang, some unexpected lauding of "Penguin Planet", and a 1 star rating on a story I wrote in 1982.
November 24, 2025 at 6:03 PM
Ok, that's what's bothering me.

Writers clearly know how to get loud and stand together. *gestures at feed*

But when it's a topic where solidarity could actually make a *real* difference in paying writers, the nice guys tell everyone to hush and look away and they do.

Now edits.

It’s that time of year when everyone goes ‘Omg I gotta tell everyone all the things they can nominate me for’ and then sits around wondering if anyone actually will.

Feel free to nominate my stories for a Hugo, Nebula, Stoker, BSFA, Pulitzer, Nobel… But, equally, I’m thrilled if you just read them.
