Our President @edjewell.bsky.social writes of public #Libraries as places that can 'disrupt the status quo'.

Libraries are vital repositories of challenging ideas, which is why they are so crucial to initiatives like #BannedBooksWeekUK.

Back on the Beeb to talk about spooky books. So much to cover I had to bring a suitcase… Always room for @dannyrobins.bsky.social, though!

It was a privilege to speak at last month’s London Libraries Conference. For me, the future of libraries depends on being clear about our purpose; to provide safe civic spaces, protect access to ideas in all their diversity and give people the skills and confidence to shape their own lives.
The public #Librarian's role is more challenging than ever, @edjewell.bsky.social notes. Librarians deal with cultural foment, amidst a reading for pleasure crisis.

Yet #Libraries' power to grant safe spaces for challenging ideas remains undimmed.

Really enjoyed having a chat with Jim Delbridge on BBC Radio Guernsey earlier this afternoon. If you fancy taking a dive into the world of libraries and my own somewhat idiosyncratic musical taste, it all kicks off at 3:09:10.

Enjoyed Jon Tarrant’s piece in the JEP today on AI, creativity & the value of reading.

Literacy isn’t just about decoding text, it’s about curiosity, critical thinking, and the ability to question the world around us. Which is why initiatives like the Summer Reading Challenge are so important.

Closing #LCSeminar2025, @edjewell.bsky.social focuses on the theme of resilience. Libraries, he says, are a particularly resilient 'circulation system' pumping information around the community. Their role going forward will be to strengthen all forms of #Literacy, including around climate.
