A major loss to SFF but especially to Canadian SFF.

On Spec has been the beating heart of Canadian science fiction for more than three decades.

The fact that the magazine has deep Edmonton roots fills us with a lot of civic pride, and is part of what inspired this Worldcon bid.

Wondering what our proposed Worlcon venue would look like if it were in the process of being destroyed by gigantic robots, check out the anime Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans.

The city is portrayed fairly accurately, though Edmonton has slightly fewer gigantic robots in real life.

Wondering how to pronounce the characters "ᐊᒥᐢᑿᒌᐚᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ" in our bid name?

The word is Amiskwacîwâskahikan, it means "Beaver Hills House," and it's the Plains Cree name for what is now called Edmonton.

Here's a pronunciation guide: forvo.com/word/amiskwa...

The positive impact that On Spec has had on Canadian Science Fiction cannot be overstated.
With our new issue, we are making the sad announcement that this will be the final year for On Spec. See www.onspec.ca for details.

Speaking of @canconsffh.bsky.social , last year's starter pack for panelists, vendors and volunteeers was popular, so I made a new one for this year. Please tell me if you're on programming or helping out with Can*Con this year and would like to be added, or if you'd like to be removed.

Pleased to mention that we now have a YouTube channel.

Some videos are there from our online bid party, with plans to upload more over the next year.

I'm told that YouTube etiquette demands we encourage people to "SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON AND SUBSCRIBE."

If we are fortunate enough to host a Worldcon in ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ (Edmonton), we will be very mindful of the fact that the convention would be held in Treaty 6 territory.

Once our bid committee is formed in the next month, we will require committee members to take Indigenous Awareness training.

Congratulations to friend of the bid Diane Walton from @onspecmag.bsky.social for receiving a well-deserved honour from the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association!

Correction: some people visiting our bid table at @seattlein2025.org were informed that due to Canada using the metric system, the schedule of our event would be measured in kiloseconds and megaseconds.

This is incorrect.

We apologize for any confusion.
