We asked our colleagues at EESI if they have any New Year’s resolutions that can help reduce their impact on the planet. Swipe for the responses we received...
1. Hannah Wilson-Black: Buying all of my clothes used (except socks and underwear but I don’t think you need to specify that lol). 2. Amaury Laporte: Eating more organic, fair trade chocolate with no palm oil. It will be better for the planet, and also for my mental health. 3. Ulrich Lindqvist: Continuing to not drive, which is also great for pedestrian safety. (The serious answer is meatless Mondays.) 4. Dan O’Brien: Buying a used hybrid. Not buying clothes. Only eating meat once a week. Using the bulk section and bringing my own containers so I don't buy more plastic packaging. 5. Alison Davis: Paying more attention to what fruits and vegetables are in season so I don’t buy food that had to travel a long way. 6. Tim Slattery: Bringing a reusable cup to coffeeshops so I don’t need to use disposable cups. (I often do that already, but it sounds like a good resolution.) 7. Laura Gries: Buying less and buying smarter! Whether that's reducing single-use plastics or shopping locally.

How Can We Cut Industrial Emissions? Key Takeaways: 1. There are more than 2,500 industrial facilities in the United States that each emit at least 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent a year. 2. The Department of Energy has a five-category framework to asses industrial decarbonization technologies’ readiness for deployment. There are readily deployable technologies, including energy efficiency measures, raw material substitution, and carbon capture and storage. 3. The federal government can encourage private investment in industrial decarbonization through incentivizing supply through providing grants, creating demand especially through government procurement, and implementing regulations like those that would set greenhouse gas emissions limits. 4. The European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism may encourage investments in industrial decarbonization in the United States and elsewhere.

Powering Up: Improving Energy Grid Reliability and Resilience to Lower Energy Bills, Key Takeaways: 1. Every power system has three main components: generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure to serve demand points. 2. Expanding the capacity of the transmission system could save U.S. households somewhere between $6.3 and $10.4 billion per year (after accounting for the cost of new infrastructure) by allowing more efficient access to the lowest-cost electricity. 3. Regional transmission lines can also promote sharing resources across the grid, creating more flexibility to integrate renewable energy. 4. Generation and transmission optimization, including grid-enhancing technologies and the reconductoring of existing transmission lines, are the most efficient and affordable methods to improve the grid for consumers.

There was A LOT to keep track of at the UN climate talks in Belém, Brazil (COP30). Not to worry! EESI recently held a Rapid Readout to unpack where key negotiations landed, plus other important outcomes.

1. The 2025 UN climate summit (COP30) produced the Belém Political Package, which helps continue the dialogue on increasing national climate commitments as well as climate finance flows from developed countries to developing countries to ensure a just transition to clean energy. 2. Other key announcements made at COP30 include the launch of Brazil’s Tropical Forest Forever Facility, the launch of a global carbon market coalition to harmonize carbon pricing, a Call to Action on Integrated Fire Management and Wildfire Resilience, and a Blue Package on ocean action. 3. Roadmaps to phase out fossil fuels and to reverse deforestation were not included in the final COP30 package. Instead, the COP30 Presidency pledged to develop a fossil fuel roadmap over the course of the next year. 4. The Local Leaders Forum brought together more than 3,000 subnational leaders from around the world. Discussions focused on methane reduction, nature-based solutions for climate resilience, and accessing international climate finance at the local level. 5. The federal government was absent at the 2025 UN climate summit. But there is a role for Congress as well as U.S. states, tribes, cities, and other stakeholders in international climate diplomacy. Their engagement continues to grow in importance as conversations increasingly focus on concrete actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve community resilience.
