The Met Office is looking suggestions for 5 names for storms. Like with Boaty McBoatface but with more serious intent, thousands are right now suggesting: BigOil, BP, Equinor, Exxon, Shell. :-)

EXPRESSIVE writing gets the thumbs up from the scientific community – to date there's far too little evidence about the physical / mental benefits of CREATIVE writing – personal experience suggests huge benefits. It's where I work through so many of my current issues and concerns. What about you?
I've just finished a Master's dissertation deep dive into the power of expressive writing for mental and physical health. Science proves expressive writing is a powerful tool in our health and wellbeing toolkit – and it is so underused!

Change in our climate is accelerating but we are still embarking on multi-decade projects along vulnerable, rapidly eroding coasts. Are we thinking far enough into the future? I am not convinced that we are.

On the power of writing...
Take writing seriously, even if what you are writing is anything but 'serious'. Writing has the power to transform so much. I'll be examining this more in future posts. For now, just remember that...

Another important article from @dpcarrington.bsky.social I try to read this kind of information from as objective a stand point as possible (hard I know!) – emotional responses cloud our ability to approach this with solutions in our minds.

Today's thought-piece explores an idea that is fundamental to my entire relationship with writing and to what I am writing (there is a difference). I invite you to apply the word change loosely and broadly to your own writing and to your relationship with your writing.

Two young Cornish writers I worked with recently wanted to change their original idea during the day's workshop. 'Was that ok?' they asked. 'More than ok.' And I added a reminder that what they'd written before had led them here. 'It's not wasted.'

My inspiration for today's post came from an interesting, and very readable, piece by Anne-Laure Le Cunff writing in [email protected]. If you want to find out more about the neuroscience of curiosity I recommend it.
Curiosity is an overlooked part of the Writer’s toolkit – it boosts creativity, improves mental wellbeing, helps us adapt to change. See your writing in this light, and you will work from a place of excitement and interest – that will transmit to readers.

Today's post is an invitation to reflect. There is no right or wrong answer, only an opportunity for awareness.

I was interested to see how differently this other writer and I experienced our writing, but however we started we ended up in a similar place, where writing was therapeutic.
In reality, there is no inside or outside, only reflection, but I wondered what would happen if I consciously adopted this other writer’s approach. Where does your writing sit on this continuum? What might happen if you changed that in some way?

When I was a child, I loved reading more than anything, but I never dreamed I would write. That was for 'other people'. When I look back, it seems to me that my beloved Schultz poster was prophetic – it took me another three decades to gather the courage to write. Be encouraged. Write!
When I was a child, I had a favourite poster – sitting on top of Snoopy’s house, Woodstock was writing at a typewriter. Snoopy was sitting behind smiling, patting Woodstock on the head. The poster read: A bit of encouragement never did anyone any harm. :-)

Biography, creative non-fiction, a particular setting, believable characters – each of these have a relationship with the truth that may be worth unpicking. I felt challenged by what I heard from Mario Vargas Llosa – and you?
Do lies and truth matter to you in your writing? Does truth need to be external (verifiable) or internal (does your writing merely have to ‘feel’ true to your reader)? In which case is this just a question of internal coherence, or is it something deeper?

Some questions about the influence of audience on your work.
A good orator, Aristotle said in his Rhetoric, manipulates the emotions of their audience (pathos), and builds credibility (ethos) and internal logic (logos). Is this view helpful? And if your intended audience is you, is it still relevant?

Why not come up with a. a boring idea; b. an interesting idea; c. a crazy idea (or three)?
Our brains are very much more plastic (in the sense of not being fixed) than we ever used to understand. Even into adulthood, new neurons are created in the hippocampus, and new connections made throughout the brain. So, what are you waiting for?
