Anthropic didn’t just torrent books. They destroyed a million physical books to scan them. Without permission or payment to the publishers or authors for using their work to feed the LLM.

I don’t pirate software and I don’t care to argue why the two things are simply not the same. It’s not a moral argument, they’re simply different scenarios entirely.

“Only a few” companies scraped millions of books and millions of people’s work?! Every major player in the market?!

Not an accurate parallel. Some of my own writing and all of my parents’ life work was pirated to train LLMs. We didn’t use pirated MS Word to write it, and I don’t think anyone who might have went on to claw down billions of dollars.
