Gustave Caillebotte painted "Paris Street; Rainy Day" in 1877. He was the youngest of the Impressionists, but unlike Monet or Renoir he used more refined brushstrokes. The painting remained in his family until 1955 and is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Monet’s works weren’t initially well received by the Salon de Paris, which continually rejected them. Other artists faced the same lack of recognition. So together they organized their own exhibition, which became known as the first Impressionist exhibition (1874).

In 1891, Claude Monet painted a series of views of poplars on the Epte river. Completion was threatened when the trees were put up for auction, so Monet bought them to ensure they remained standing until he was finished. He later sold them back to the lumber merchant who wanted them.
