Some of the resulting reforms have been rolled back. Some on the state and local levels remain. This reminds us that the struggle has never been a straight line. Still, We Rise.

Today, October 14th, we remember George Floyd on what should have been his 52nd birthday.

His murder in 2020 by white police officer Derek Chauvin sparked a summer of protests calling for justice and police reform.

These books are not banned in every school or city library. But they are banned in far too many across the country.

It is important to recognize that mental health symptoms can show up at school in ways that are often misinterpreted as bad behavior. This contributes to absenteeism and the school to prison pipeline. 🧵 #MIAW

Research shows reading is great for mental health and reading books that reflect a person's lived experience matter.
Unfortunately, authors regularly face banning. These are just a FEW of the titles by Black authors on the Banned List.

Are you in Michigan? Help your school get the additional resources they need. Complete a Michigan School Meal Form TODAY. These forms are about more than just school meals. They help determine additional funding for classrooms, teachers and more! Follow this thread for the website.
A graphic displays the "School Meals" logo, which includes images of food items like a sandwich, banana, and apple. Below this graphic, the text "Did You Know?" is prominently displayed in a large, bold font. The text beneath this headline explains that School Meal Forms are about more than just school meals. They are used to determine additional benefits for classrooms, teachers, children, and guidance/college counselors. The text then provides two options for completing the forms: "Education and Nutrition Benefits Application" and "Education Benefits Form (formerly the Household Information Report)". Finally, the text advises contacting the school administrator to determine the appropriate form.

It's National Voter Registration Day! The online chatter may be about the 2026 mid-terms but there's important local elections happening before then. On November 4th many cities will hold elections for Mayor and City Council. Are you registered? mi.gov/vote
A stylized city map in shades of teal, green, and pastel colors forms the background. Overlaid on the map is text that reads: "It's NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY" in large, bold, uppercase letters. Smaller text below asks, "are YOU ready to vote in your city/county Local Elections?".

Below this, bullet points list actions to take, including: "Register for the 1st time", "Update your info if you've moved or changed your name", and "Double check voter information to make sure it's right".

A small, circular calendar icon in a dark-purple border displays "NOVEMBER 04" prominently. A lower-right corner graphic features a purple logo with a butterfly silhouette and the words "emergent JUSTICE". A web address, "mi.gov/vote", is presented prominently in a dark button-like style at the bottom.

Emergent Justice isn't giving up on disenfranchised youth.

That's why we are a founding member of the Michigan Student Network for Pipeline Prevention AND why we're building a network of Peer 2 Peer Teams of young people that support each other to stay in school, stay out of trouble and on track.
Five young Black teens are grouped together outdoors, likely in a park or schoolyard. They are smiling and appear to be engaged in conversation. A light orange box/text overlay is positioned in the lower-center portion of the image. The text in the box explains a "Peer 2 Peer" program, emphasizing the support network among young people where young people help other young people stay in school, avoid trouble, and succeed. The logo for Emergent Justice and "MSNPP" are also visible in smaller text at the bottom right of the image. A question, "WHAT DOES THE PEER 2 PEER TEAM DO?", is posed in a light beige colored box centered at the top of a graphic. Below the question are five light-colored rectangular buttons, each containing a different answer choice. The buttons are in various pastel colors. From top to bottom the options are: Mentoring and Listening, Conflict resolution, Skill-building Workshops, Support for Teachers, and Community. In the bottom right corner of the graphic, a small logo is present, which has a butterfly image with the words "Emergent JUSTICE" in the graphic, and below that is the text "MSNPP". Two Black teens are seated in what appears to be a conference room or similar setting. The person on the left, partially visible, is wearing a mustard-yellow colored sweater. Three young Black teens, two male and one female, are seated together, smiling. They appear to be involved in a collaborative effort, possibly discussing something on a laptop or in conversation.

Overlaid on the image are several rectangular buttons, in pastel colors, that highlight reasons why a "peer to peer" team approach is beneficial. The buttons read: "WHY THE PEER 2 PEER TEAM WORKS," "Students Trust Peers," "Real-World Solutions from Peers," "Builds Community," and "Research Proven Results". A logo with a butterfly image and the words "MSNPP" and "Emergent JUSTICE" appears in the lower right corner.

61 years ago today Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer one of the most courageous activists of the Civil Rights Movement posed the question that echoes today with every migrant round-up by masked officers, as federal troops converge on D.C.,as institutions are threatened:

Dear Black Folks: The Protests Against ICE Are Absolutely Our Fight Too [Op-Ed]
What ICE is doing to migrants isn’t just an immigration issue. It’s white supremacist violence at its core. It’s separating families. It’s state violence.

Happy Juneteenth!! We celebrate our freedom and resilience as we recognize the fight is not over.

We honor our history with a special shoutout to Ms. Opal Lee, who fought for a decade to make this day a national holiday.
#Juneteenth #blackhistory
A graphic design celebrating Juneteenth, Freedom Day. The background is a light beige/cream color. A large title, "JUNETEENTH!", is presented in bold, capital letters in a dark, bold font. Below this, "FREEDOM DAY" is displayed in a slightly smaller, bold font.

Above the text, a short message reads: "Today we honor freedom, celebrate resilience, and stand ten toes down in the continued work toward equality, justice and freedom for all people."

Two stylized portraits of Black people are featured in the graphic. One person is a woman, seated in a portrait pose and wearing a purple/grey dress, looking directly at the viewer. The other person is a man, in a profile view, facing upwards and slightly to the right, with Rastafarian dreadlocks and a colorful pattern on his clothes. Both people's faces and hairstyles are in a bold, artistic style.

A colorful fireworks graphic is positioned above and slightly behind the two figures. A rainbow pattern stretches across the bottom, with the colors red, orange, yellow, green and blue.  A small design with a butterfly and the words "Emergent JUSTICE" in a sans-serif typeface is placed in the bottom left corner.
