It would emotionally kill Hades to say goodbye to his child forever, but he'd be willing to make that sacrifice and finally be a good father for once.

I'm kind of also toying with the new idea of Hades, as a very last ditch effort to do right by his son, offering Orpheus the chance to live again in a new life. To be reincarnated after drinking from the Lethe, and become someone completely different.

And the fic was meant to end with Hades secretly but truly wanting his son to be alive again and to live out his own life instead of being one of thousands of shades in the underworld... but we all know how the story goes...

It was all supposed to stem from Hades' sense of heartbreak and loneliness, because he felt like he needed to at least have Orpheus in his life if his wife was going to always choose her sense of freedom over him.

And yes there's love, there but also a deep sense of possession and fear

years ago I started (and abandoned 😭) a Hadestown fic where Persephone finds Orpheus as a baby and takes him in, but to her surprise, Hades ends up becoming deeply attached to little Orpheus... to the point he doesn't want their son to ever be up in the mortal world bc he thinks its too dangerous.
