Arcade games are so cool......

(Any time she starts yapping about video games on social media you should take everything she says with a grain of salt)

2026 is the year we become an annoying pretentious hipster about video games
January 6, 2026 at 12:18 AM
Of course that gets harder in games where they think the actual game is being a passive observer in that game's plot and letting you grind through everything with stats alone
January 6, 2026 at 12:17 AM
I think it would be cool if games had enough confidence in themselves to LET players skip all the way to the end if they want, because seeing all the art assets isn't the game, learning the how to play the game is the game
January 6, 2026 at 12:17 AM
The vibe I've been into lately is games with uncompromising difficulty that give you every tool possible to better learn how to deal with said difficulty

I appreciate when even if the immediate consequences for death are removed, the player still has this scar on their run reminding them of what they could've done better. It also serves as benchmark, a number you can lower the next time you try.

I feel like if you make a port/remake/remaster that removes lives from an arcade style game, you're obligated to add a death counter sternly glaring at the player the player every time they fail
January 5, 2026 at 11:17 PM
Of course because I'm doing this with my tablet awkwardly propped up on a cardboard box, in practice the game looks like this

Still kinda cool tho

Trying Dariusburst CS on my janky multi-monitor setup and this is cool as fuck???

The game was clearly designed for a single ultrawide monitor and not two monitors of very different sizes, but it's kinda fun trying to mentally connect the dots and track hazards between screens

I'm more trying to decide which games I'd want to spend countless hours playing over and over again trying to learn inside and out, that's a much a different proposition than credit feeding through a game that has pretty graphics and good music
January 3, 2026 at 10:51 PM
I really want to play more arcade games, though I'm also not sure which I'd wanna take the time to learn........

It feels like more a matter of giving an enemy all these heuristics to help them reach a location, and then changing which location they target

For example, Pac-Man ghosts all navigate their environment the same way, but what makes them unique is *where* they decide to navigate relative to Pac-Man
January 3, 2026 at 11:55 AM
I noticed a lot of interesting interactions happen less in how the enemy attacks, and more how they *move*, how they control the screen.
January 3, 2026 at 11:55 AM
I love enemies in games that react to both the player and their environment in interesting ways
January 3, 2026 at 11:55 AM
sometimes you just gotta try stuff regardless of if it's a good idea or not

I reeaaally wish I could gamedev more, it's just hard when an unfinished unreleased game does not actually make money

(even finished games for a dev without a back catalog is more of a trickle from everything we've heard lol)

I think something I want to do in 2026 is finish the comms I owe people right now, then actually start a patreon for both art and gamedev
