Texas community college English instructor
The community college where I teach just hired a Chief AI Transformation Officer, and I am actually thinking optimistically about it.

Like, my school is so comically desperate to be on-trend and taken seriously that this move can only end up being a waste of time and money. #bubble

Didn’t expect Vanderpump Rules to be THIS much about dead dads.

Too bad walking my two dogs at the same time is the worst thing I’ve ever experienced in my almost 40 years of life

I’ve done all the in-between, creative measures. It’s been exhausting. Barely worked.

Starting to feel like there’s only two options for next semester re AI:

- Absolute zero tolerance, let the students get furious, let admin be swamped under complaints

- Give up completely, pass ‘em all if that’s what my institution wants, find the few who care, & save my time

Seriously considering not offering written feedback anymore. I’m not conversing with a robot 40% of the time. And I’m *this* close to doing what he does in this article. “You wanna pay for a B and do absolutely nothing? Fine. You got it. Leave. I’m not spending a whole semester negotiating with AI.”

I know I obsessively read everything about AI, but *this* article is exactly right about everything. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

I have been very anti-“it’s important to teach students email etiquette” respectability.

Buuuuuuut the students are now fully treating email like text messaging (they even say “I’ll text you” to me) and rapid-fire message me multiple times in a row. Nopeeee nope nope.

Ted Chiang’s AI piece is excellent, but I’ve been thinking a lot about his speculative op-ed and the idea that AI is supposed to “democratize education.”

Students at elite institutions can afford to take time to learn & avoid AI.

The people who say, “Well, AI’s not going away…” in meetings like they’re sharing something I don’t lie in bed grinding my teeth over make me so so mad.

Are you referencing TX SB 37? 💔

Is it fully passed? (Or does it need further approval in the House or something?)
April 18, 2025 at 3:28 PM
I’m realllllly trying to not feel salty, so as an academic in TX who has already been living with anti-DEI terror for a year… uh, welcome, y’all!

Just FYI: you may want to read about our Senate Bill 37. Cause they’re coming for Faculty Senates and ethnic studies.

I know academia has been fucked for a long time, but AI, student deportations, and anti-DEI all hitting at once is truly too much. (I’m having trouble being around people who aren’t horrified every second.)

My two favorite performances of 2025 so far: Tom Sandoval humming nursery rhymes and Mark Duplass playing Michael Barnett. (Both creepy lil psychos!)

I stay on Twitter so I can see what all the AI shills and boosters are saying. 😭
