** It's happening!! **

We managed to convince Google to open source PebbleOS. Took a while, but they just did it today! github.com/google/pebble

With that, we're bringing Pebble back! I blogged about it - ericmigi.com/blog/why-wer...

Ship has sailed, sorry. Can't put it back in the box

No, it's not and it's frankly ridiculous to me that in 2025 intelligent people are surprised/appalled at people using AI to help code. It seems to be only on Bluesky that I get messages like this, maybe this is just some crazy echo chamber?

It's turtles all the way down.

Sorry, I don't understand the point that you're trying to make here.
ericmigi.com
sorry to hear that. I feel like my posts on ericmigi.com have been pretty detailed. anything specific missing, other than a ship date for your watch (which I realize is probably what most people care about the most!)

I recommend you use gadgetbridge then. It's designed exactly for you - it's a fully open source Pebble-compatible app that does make any network calls.

What ... is the gap?
ericmigi.com
I personally don't contribute to either of those, others write them. I hope they use AI!
ericmigi.com
Yes, I can't code by myself and with AI I can.

Just like any other tool, you must be cognizant of the risks with using AI coding tools. Same as using random libraries you find on GitHub. But it's an incredible accelerant, especially useful for hacking together prototypes to test something (like the demo I posted)

Saying you won't use AI to help you code because of some blanket fear of security issues is not productive. Contribute! Write your own Pebble app! Write your own Pebble firmware (it's open source btw). Use ours, or don't.

A) the library is open source, you can read the code github.com/coredevices/.... You can always use gadgetbridgebtoo

B) if you're concerned with the security of an app that you didn't write yourself, I recommend using Wireshark to ensure that it's not making any network calls that you don't approve
