How do freelance/independent UX ✌️thought leaders✌️have the background to authoritatively give advice on how to get hired or what hiring managers expect to see in a portfolio?

Bummed to not win another chance to run the Chicago marathon this fall. Still one of my favorites despite not having run it since 2018 and 2019. Was hoping for the chance to go back.

Every time I see a UX or design consultant (they’re almost always consultants) attach their narrative to a story they had nothing to do with to reach conclusions favorable to them I’m reminded of this book from over a decade ago

I mean, if you take a 12 week course in behavioral psych at your nearby school and you now think you know how humans gunna human so you’re the smartest wireframer in the room, it ain’t gonna end well.

Chuckling at the hot takes criticizing UX bootcamps for being too skin-deep (if any exposure) to meaty topics like behavioral psych, cognitive psych, systems thinking, economics & design history. Bruh you just laid out a 12 year program if you want any ✌️depth✌️in those subjects to be appropriate.

Usually presenting work *should* be an opportunity for feedback, unless you’ve perfected walking up, announcing there will be no questions either during or following, and immediately exiting stage left like the pj is on the tarmac

Love to see @hangxu.bsky.social trying to look at multiple angles & nuance of the reality of hiring managers expecting design exercises of ICs and portfolios/presentations as baseline reps for #uxjobs. It’s not pretty; unrealistic expectations don’t make it easier to overcome the gap between hm/cand

Also really looking forward to using Bluesky as my way to subtwee, wait, subskeet? dumb-as-all-hell LinkedIn hot takes I couldn’t bring myself to actually respond to on that platform.

After experiencing Election Day in Budapest (yes, I mailed in my ballot 😱) and now spending Thanksgiving weekend in Puerto Rico I’m digging this GTFO/Do Not Engage approach to some events.
