When I wrote the final SIR CALLIE book, I had to imagine the very worst Peran's world could be--a world where no one is immune to his whims and tempers; where his most dedicated are treated with as little humanity as his enemies. Where the world and the war are just a game for his own entertainment.

Seeing the Bill Watterson originals full of pencil lines of stuff that didn’t work, scuffs the eraser didn’t pick up, white out galore and more was something I needed to see to remind myself that nothing is perfect the first go and tweaks need to be made and you’re allowed to try again.

Instead, I see a man who falsely proclaims himself 'king', rules with reckless fear and violence, and strips his people of the right to tell good from bad.

I am terrified and furious that this book comes out in these times. But I'm also so incredibly grateful it will.

I finished it just a couple of months before the 2024 US election--the first I could vote in-- and I had just enough fragile hope to believe that SIR CALLIE'S themes would stay a fictional reflection of what could have been.
