When giving instructions, include 3 things:

1. What you want done
2. When you want it done
3. Why it matters

This is what Ellie Middleton calls the "what, by when, and why" framework.

Avoid “us vs. them” language.

Your company might share well-intentioned statements like:

- “We are shocked by this racist news.”
- “We must support our racially minoritised colleagues.”

But these messages can cause harm.

Who does “we” actually refer to? (Is it just white folks?)
5 ways to use emojis accessibly:

1. Don't use them as bullet points
2. Stick to one or two per post
3. Don’t replace words with emojis
4. Use emojis that work well on light/dark backgrounds
5. Put them at the end of sentences

(on our assistive technology, in language we understand, with enough colour contrast so we can actually read it, formatted properly so we can hear it, in a structure that makes sense, is clear and memorable - even when we’re exhausted, distracted or worried).
• building a solid employer brand that makes people want to work for you (and stick around, once they do)
• creating content that can really reach people
• securing market share (71% of consumers say they’re likely to buy an inclusive alternative to a product, even if it doesn’t apply to them. So when you innovate for neglected customers, you may win more than ‘just’ their business).
• building a robust reputation (with the 80.8% of consumers who agree that “brands and businesses have a role to play in addressing social issues” and the 73.1% of consumers think it’s important that brands create a platform for under-represented or impacted communities,

Honestly, why would any brand NOT invest in inclusive and accessible communication?

If you're not investing, you're missing out on:
• deeper connections with your audiences,
• earning loyalty from customers who feel cared for,
I got up on my soapbox and ranted about:
• how inclusive and accessible communication can be simple and straightforward
• why it's a non-negotiable
• why "professionalism" can get in the bin.

Wayyy too many organisations think it’s complex, confusing or expensive to make their communications inclusive and accessible.

It's not.

I loved joining Peta O'Brien-Day on her fabulous podcast, the Soapbox.

So, try adding:

- “It’s nothing bad!”
- “I've got some positive feedback for you."
- “I’ve got more info about this task.”

“Hey, can we talk?”

My brain translates that as: "You're in big trouble."

Context can prevent stress for a lot of ADHDers - and many other folks!

A simple way to accommodate ADHDers?

Start requests with a clear note on how urgent they are:

• “For Monday”
• “Open after your holiday”
• “Non-urgent request”
• “Top priority for next week”

This small change helps everyone - not just ADHDers.

Try it and see ☺️
The superpower myth has real consequences. It praises us, while denying us the support we need.

[Content warning: mention of suicide and addiction]

ADHDers are:

- 30% more likely to have ongoing employment issues,
- 5 times more likely to try to kill ourselves,
- 5 to 10 times more likely to experience alcohol addiction,
- at risk of dying younger (possibly by as many as 13 years).

ADHD isn’t a superpower.
