What if refugee relocation could work better for everyone?

As the EU implements the Pact on Migration & Asylum, the new Solidarity Mechanism is a chance to truly centre solidarity, between Member States, people seeking protection & host communities.

EUROPE CAN MAKE REFUGEE RELOCATION BETTER FOR EVERYONE. Our Recommendations for the EU Solidarity Mechanism.
THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE EU PACT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CENTRE SOLIDARITY. When done right, relocation accelerates asylum procedures, improves access to assistance, fosters long-term integration, and benefits both newcomers and host communities. WE HAVE EVIDENCE THAT DATA-DRIVEN RELOCATION WORKS. Letting people seeking protection express their needs and matching them with places that fit these needs improves integration and reduces the risk of repeated displacement. Overlooking preferences
only makes the process less efficient. IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAKE RELOCATION MORE HUMANE AND MORE SUCCESSFUL. Participatory relocation projects like Re:Match
use an algorithm to match the needs and preferences of people seeking protection with cities’ capacities and opportunities.

After 2 years of Israeli bombardment, the situation in Gaza is devastating: 90% displaced & the world’s highest number of child amputees per capita.

This can't go on.

We call for full humanitarian access, protection for children and an immediate ceasefire to save lives and free remaining hostages.
A Palestinian woman is standing in front of a fallen building, she is holding a young child, a blanket and a backpack in her arms. The text above her head reads "The devastation in Gaza must end".

"I can’t show my fear. I keep it together for the sake of my children", Amani Aziz in Gaza says.

Our teams work tirelessly to create safe spaces for displaced families in Gaza, where children like Amani’s are given the chance to feel joy and hope together with others.

A decade ago, an image of the lifeless body of toddler Aylan Kurdi became a symbol of the many lives tragically lost in the Med in search of safety.

It should have inspired humane EU action. Instead, its response has been marred by contradictions.

On 10th July 2025, the EU and Israel struck a deal to allow 'substantial' humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The IRC and partners are tracking the state of implementation of this deal.

"What we're seeing in Gaza today is a distribution that goes against every principle, every good practice of modern humanitarian aid. It's unsafe and dehumanising... It's insufficient and inadequate."

Recent reports of children in Gaza being killed while waiting for nutritional supplements and drinking water are horrifying. The reckless killing of children is plainly illegal.

We call on all parties to the conflict to uphold international humanitarian law and protect children’s lives.

The proposal to create a €200bn EU external action budget could be cause for optimism.

But the merger of external action instruments must be managed carefully, or people in the world’s most fragile countries risk being hit hardest.

📢The EU's recent 'safe country' proposals risk outsourcing asylum responsibilities and undermining refugee protection.

JOINT STATEMENT: The EU's new 'safe country' proposals appear to be part of a broader strategy to externalise the EU’s migration management.

With 52 NGOs, we're calling on the EU and member states to reject any attempts to weaken protection for asylum seekers.

3) If Europe can successfully integrate more than 4 million refugees from Ukraine in just a few years, it is capable of doing the same for people displaced from other countries.

The EU has the means to make this a reality - what's needed now is the political will.

2) Access to the labour market has huge economic benefits for host communities.

By allowing Ukrainian refugees to immediately work and start small businesses in Poland, the country boosted its GDP by 2.7% in 2024.

1) Work is more than an income - it’s a source of identity, self-worth, and independence.

Refugees need access to the labour market in order to rebuild their lives in a new country.

With vaccine-preventable diseases on the rise, it's vital that donors fully fund @gavi.org's replenishment.

As donors meet today in Brussels, we're calling on the EU to invest in immunisation, and work with NGOs to deliver vaccines in a proven, efficient, and cost-effective way.

This is it.

Today, leaders decide if 500 million children will be protected from preventable diseases. If 8–9 million lives will be saved. If we’re prepared for the next pandemic.

We are ready to rise to the moment.
